Iron kettle scraps

These 5 pieces of an iron pot or kettle were recovered from a roughly 15-inch-diameter area. They include two body pieces, a handle, and three leg pieces (one not pictured). Several other similar pieces, including another handle, were found within a 5-foot area.

Musket balls

65 musket balls recovered from a single metal detector hit/shovel test! The speculation is that it might represent a lost ammo pouch. Not sure how previous surveys missed this!

Lots of hits along fence line

Pin flags marking metal detector "hits" while surveying the Fannin Battleground State Historic Site. Note the large number along the fence, most likely all 20th century stuff related to fence construction. This is away from the main battle field area.

Small historic cemetery

This little cemetery has 10 burials with 8 markers, dating to the late 19th and early 20th century. One of the names is Rhodius. Some unusual graves, out on the edge of a hayfield near Cibolo Creek northeast of San Antonio.

Concrete seashell motif is interesting, considering that this is northeast of San Antonio, Texas. The Gulf is at least 120 miles away

Ali and donkey

This donkey was very sweet. He came right up to the fence and put his nose out to be petted. he wasn't happy until all three of us had scratched his nose, but I think he liked Ali best. Taken March 4 near Minco, Oklahoma.

Urinal outhouse

This is an outhouse with only a urinal trough. Never seen one of these before! Located at the Hazel Dell Community Hall near Cogar, OK. Taken on March 4.

Prairie Dog village

In one small part of the huge windfarm project area, there was a prairie dog colony. Naturally, I came up with a compelling reason to resurvey this area! These guys were extremely camera shy. I like the turbines way in the background, too.

Another weird item on the oddly decorated fenceline (see the tin man in this photostream. This one has several trophy parts mounted on a board.

Tree engulfing fence strands

I'm sure I have other pictures like this, but I'm always drawn to trees that have grown around fence strands. If I ever have a ranch, I'm going to make sure and plant a few saplings to use as fence posts!

The same sweet donkey that insisted on being petted by the crew. I really love donkeys, and this fella might well have been the nicest donkey I've ever been around! He's also a handsome guy.

Date on storm cellar

This storm cellar was out in the middle of a pasture, with no sign of a house anywhere nearby. While recording the site, someone cleaned off the top and saw this date, 1913. Less clear is the "Sept." next to it. If only it were always this easy! Taken March 1, 2011, early afternoon.

Really cool lid

This lid was at the 1913 storm cellar site. i don't know what type of jar of product it was used for, and I haven't tried to look it up yet. I just thought the design was really interesting with all of the aquatic wildlife!

"Roosevelt" WPA toilet?

This is supposedly a concrete toilet, sometimes called a "Roosevelt toilet" that was built and provided to families by the WPA (Works Progress Administration) as part of the New Deal. There's a lot of WPA works in Oklahoma and the Plains, but this is the first I've seen one of these. In fact, I heard of these for the first time in mid-February, 2011. This looks different than the few photos I've seen online, so I'm open to the possibility that it's actually a wellhead, especially as it's no where near a structure, adn there's another WPA toilet at the house associated with the site.

Old keepsake box

Found in the abandoned Ford house outside Minco, Oklahoma. There's a 1959 penny, some buttons, a pair of glasses (bifocals), a bead necklace, and a brass football charm, among other things. Think it may have belonged to the mother, Sandra. It's an interesting example of "curated" artifacts, in that the house was built in the early 1900s, likely abandoned in the late 1990s, and these artifacts date from the 1950s-1970s. I was tempted to take the football charm.

This 1993 calendar of women in bikinis is from Minco Auto Supply. It was hanging on one of the walls of the abandoned Ford house. Note the rollerblades ;)
