I took the day off my regular job to visit my wife's school and take photos of the kids doing a pumpkin project. I have some really fun shots, but this candid of this little girl is just to die for!

I read Joe McNally's book "The Moment it Clicks" about a year ago. The except below really stuck with me and I think of it every time I make a shot like this. A moment in this girls life, that lasted for less than a second, is now recorded. I knew it the moment it clicked, and it was good ;)

It’s about being a photographer.

It’s about the sheer joy of clicking the shutter…repeatedly! The sweet sound of the shutter and the explosion that occurs in your head and your heart when you make the shot. The deal is the shot, you know. You make the picture and you know something just froze solid in a shifting world. Something stabilized, for all time. You just hung your hat on a moment that otherwise would be gone forever, and now you can go back and take a look at that moment, be it amazing or ordinary, any time you want.

It’s about your eye in the camera as the light hits just right. It’s about the slight turn of your subject’s face that speaks the truth. It’s about holding your breath as you shoot. It’s about the nerves, the joy, and the terror of wondering if you got it. And then dancing about, punching holes in the air when you know you do. It’s about… the moment it clicks.”

Strobist:
This is in a small, well lit gym. (iso 800, f2.8, 1/100) I used one light in a 60" reflective umbrella with a 3/4 cto to balance with ambient.
For this shot, the umbrella was about 30 feet to my right and about 8 feet in front of her. Just a little directional fill is all the flash provided...

On the left is one of my most popular flickr photos ever. My middle daughter at 6 months old.

On the right is my youngest daughter at 7 months old. Three years separate them :)

I wish I had one of my oldest, but I think she might be a little old for that now!

Three years also separates the camera gear used. It's likely the photo on the left was an 18 - 55 kit lens on a D40. On the right is a 17 - 35mm f2.8 with a D3 ;).

More interesting than the gear to me is that my preference in post processing has also changed. No more super saturation and blue whites ;)

She came back to me earlier this week from a CLA by Youxin Ye (highly recommended: www.yyecamera.com).

The exterior leatherette was falling off the body so I opted to recover her in brown paradise snakeskin leather.

She shoots better than she looks and she looks pretty sweet!

Everything about his camera puts a smile on my face :)

Meet Chuck and his family! Chuck is a friend and coworker and I was happy to meet him after work today for a few quick shots. We had fantastic overcast conditions to work with so all I needed was a little fill flash to bring them up a bit.
