Former Saratoga & Schuylerville freight house seen through the trees. I took this photo using an aging camera - a Kodak Vigilant 616 - with a bellows-mounted lens, and holes in the bellows allowed light leakage that created the flaring in the image. February 11, 1975.

What was I thinking when I took this picture?! Was having bare trees obscuring the view between me and my subject supposed to be "Artistic"?

I'm actually lucky to have gotten this much of an image. This was the last shot on the roll and I've cropped out the portion of the picture where an end-of-roll serial number was incorporated. If I'd waited for the train to get closer, I may have found myself with some REAL obscuring-the-view issues.

The Branch Line title here is a gag, since the train is heading south on the Delaware and Hudson Railway main line to Montreal, on its way to the Albany-Rennselaer station.

Marvin Square, Saratoga Springs. My mother sent me this photo of an area of Saratoga that I somehow missed visiting in my time there.

My title for this photo will be familiar to enthusiasts of the Pogo comic strip. I wonder now if that had anything to do with that song about Charlie on the MTA.

Railroad Run, Saratoga Springs. A trail on the former alignment of the Delaware and Hudson Railway (and I suppose of precursor Rensselaer and Saratoga, and paralleled by the Hudson Valley Railway interurban system) from when the rail lines went through the heart of town. The tracks were relocated to the west of town in 1959 to rid the city of its multitude of grade crossings. My mother took this picture for me.

Drawings of, from the top, the Fort Edward, Port Henry, and Westport station buildings, at stopping points of Amtrak's New York-Montreal train The Adirondack, originally constructed by the Delaware and Hudson Railway. This picture was posted inside Amtrak's cafe-lounge car Saratoga Inn, named for another city served by the train, and I guess regularly included in the train's consist.

The Fort Edward illustration is rather more fanciful than the other two renderings.

Elevations and roof plan that I extrapolated from photos I'd taken from only one angle of the Fort Edward, New York Delaware and Hudson Railway Station. I scratchbuilt an N-scale version of the structure, and did these drawings to aid that process... I think. I may have done these drawings (that aren't even complete) after finishing the building.

When I was working on the model and the drawings, I had no idea of what the north end of the original building actually looked like, and my little structure ended up being more symmetrical than the real thing. Train Time in Tiny Town

My scratchbuilt N-scale depot inspired by the Delaware and Hudson Railway station at Fort Edward, New York. This structure was based on a photo I'd taken in 1976 from a vantage point southeast of the station; I was too stingy with my film to go around the structure taking pictures of each of its sides. Nor did I take any close-up views. Thus I didn't realize that the exterior wainscoting was brick rather than wood, and I completely neglected to feature an operator's bay. The roof at the other end of the structure was built matching this end (without the D & H logo covering the dormer window). I later found out that the opposite roof configuration was substantially different from its counterpart, and also that the canopy shielding the platform extended north from the station for about the length of a passenger car.

The model construction was simplified in that the upper story windows of the actual building had been covered with wood, so I didn't need to worry about the window detail. But I couldn't figure out how to create the original's slight flaring of the roof lines at the eaves, nor how to simulate the real roof's slate tiling. The spire atop the cupola here is rather blunter than the original, and there are supposed to be vents in the cupola that I don't think I even hinted at.

I did hand-letter the D & H script on the now-yellowed piece of vellum covering the dormer window at the model's near end. I tried lettering the FORT EDWARD station sign as well, but that was asking for trouble. I ended up having a 5 X 7 print made of my single reference photo and Exactoed the image of the sign from the photograph to hang from the canopy here. This was long before the days of color photocopiers, mind you.

The yellow building in the background is based on the actual freight house that adjoins the Fort Ed station in real life. The real-life station building underwent some major refurbishment in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. In the comment box below I've inserted a view of it at an angle similar to what we see here. Note that among the improvements is the removal of the house track.

Maybe some day I'll commit to a track plan that I can live with and get serious about laying roadbed and building up a surrounding landscape so that my layout looks like something beside the track on a bare board that it is.

Delaware and Hudson Railway station, Fort Edward, New York. Served by the Amtrak trains The Adirondack and the Ethan Allen. The rail line on the right is the main line to Montreal, the tracks curving off on the left lead to the former Lake George branch, that now only goes as far as Glens Falls.

Work demands prevent me from going to see the shuttle Endeavour working its way along Manchester Blvd and up Crenshaw today on its way to the California Science Center. But I DID get to see this unusual installation by the south entrance to the Universal City Metro Red Line station.

El Royale Motel on Ventura Blvd in Studio City, California, dressed up as the "Sunny Vista Motel" for the film Bedtime Stories. The crane was dangling a scrim over the motel's parking court for more diffuse lighting in the area. In the film, the motel's location was specified to be at the corner of La Cienega and Sunset Blvds, over the hills from Studio City. April, 2008.
