After the Westway was built, the North Kensington Amenity Trust sought to put the vacant space underneath the elevated motorway to good use. As a result of the lead they took, the ribbon of land now plays host to a wealth of facilities and industrial units - many for the direct benefit of the local community, as well as the construction of a bus garage by London Transport here in 1981.

A lot of the views I take in every day are new to most Londoners and visitors alike - today the reverse applies. Being carless, heading over the Westway is still a novelty to me.

The Jubilee, Metropolitan, Bakerloo and Watford DC lines have all been closed for engineering works this weekend leaving most of North West London and Metroland-Middlesex cut off from the centre. No planner anywhere would ordinarily let this happen, but to get the Jubilee signalling upgrades finished extra shutdowns have been needed, killing off the one link that line would otherwise have provided with the other lines shut. Express replacement buses were running from Baker Street out to Wembley, by means of a flat-out run to Hanger Lane and up the North Circular.

Suburbia creeps up quickly out here. Not as quickly as on rails, but being on the road and fully exposed to front gardens, residential bay windows and pedestrians - the 'fronts', rather than the back yards, backs of shopping parades, anonymous rooftops, that transition feels more apparent - we are hurtling past semis within ten minutes of crossing the Marylebone flyover. Perhaps it is because we skim the anonymous rooftops of inner London, up here on stilts with only blocks of flats with no bottom to chart the progress, and the rude awakening of hitting a red light at Savoy Circus. The GLC's planners of the 1970s would have had it the same across the city, if it weren't for those pesky residents..
