Special Award winner Barry Carlson of Portland was honored for his 35th consecutive — and final — Cross Channel. With him are his wife, Sharon Thorne and son, Tary, who followed his father in a kayak. According to Sharon, Barry was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease six years ago and he knew this would be his Cross Channel. He is a lifelong recreational and competitive swimmer. “The Hood River Chamber of Commerce has been wonderfully supportive of Barry’s participation by allowing Tary to follow him in a kayak,” Sharon writes. “This enables Barry to take rest breaks. Before PD, he finished the swim in about 24 minutes; it now takes him around 35. The extra time is significant because the water is cold and the extra exertion is exhausting. But his determination is strong; his will to finish keeps him at it.”
