Christening Cake

Yana's cakes posted a photo:

Almond Cake filled with chocolate buttercream, iced with Rum flavoured Dark Chocolate Ganache and covered with mixture of dark & white chocolate icing. Shimmered over with bronze & gold shimmer.

This was a VERY short notice for 26th December! It had to be baked at the last minute, so I started with animals. The Monkey was easy, I made them before. Elephant's ears didn't want to stay in place, but I was more stuborn than them, the giraffe was a mystery to me and I spent few days searching the Web for inspiration. I could not find anything :(.

On Christmas Eve I was baking 5 batches of Almond cake recipe. The cake only take egg whites, 7 per batch. I was left with 35 egg yorks!!! I did find where to use them at the end, but to begin with it made me wonder ....

It took me hell of a lot of time to bake the thing as I'm stupidly did not ask my friend for a second 12" squire tin. Hence, I had to wait for each layer to cool down before I could make another batch. I know, IDIOT! The cake was filled and iced by 2 AM.

On Christmas day I had to cover the cake, make the Giraffe & pulm trees (the blocks, letters & fern brunches I also made earlier). By midday the giraffe was still a mystery. I had few pictures of real one, but could not figure out how to make a half-sitting one.

If you watched Merlin ( the new version) you will know what I mean. What ever I was making had a head of camel, body of a swan and legs of G. knows who. I squashed it trillion times, went for a stroll for an hour to cool down and finally made what you see sitting on the board. Once it was coloured it actually did look remotely giraffe like, but I still belive I need a lesson on it's making :)

Thanks you for reading my essay! :)
