Tricolored Heron with Nesting Matter

Yesterday at Wakodahatchee Wetlands there was a lot of nest-building activity--tricolored herons, cattle egrets, great blue herons, anhingas, and great egrets and who knows what I may have missed as I was only there for about an hour and a quarter. I'm including some of the other species below as they were fun to witness and capture, too. This is about as good as it gets at WW.

Not many of us post images of LBJs (little brown jobs) such as this grackle, but with the nesting material or remnants of a fish "salad" or prey (thanks to Michael Wolf's [floridanaturephotography] observation) in her beak, I feel she merits attention.

One morning while I was in Texas there was light fog which developed into heavier fog a bit later in the morning. It gives a somewhat ethereal feeling to some images, particularly those of egrets IMO, and makes the pinks of the spoonbill more translucent.

Two osprey in heat on a not too distantly past trip to Blue Cypress Lake. It is amusing to me that some birds approach sex with a "just do it" attitude unlike some humans, but they are "animals," though if anyone looks at the Birds of Paradise courtship video on YouTube (www.youtube.com/embed/REP4S0uqEOc)

This morning at Wakodahatchee Wetlands in the second round of nestbuilding this great blue heron was bringing in foliage to "feather" the nest.

This morning at Wakodahatchee Wetlands a great egret plucked up a moorhen chick (the last of the litter) to eat. This is the harsh reality of nature.

Seldom did we see spoonbills fly in with nesting material. For the most part they simply went to the base of shrubs or trees in which their nests were located and climbed up with nesting material. Fortunately for me, this spoonbill was ambitious and went off-island for a big stick. The reds are so red because this is breeding plumage, not Photoshop.

At first I thought this posture was awkward, but I came around to seeing it as graceful; great egrets in breeding plumage in flight or displaying are simply glorious imo.

This tricolored heron in breeding plumage was bringing in nesting material at Wakodahatchee Wetlands. Additionally, over the past couple of weeks woodstorks, double-crested cormorants, crows, cattle egret, great blue heron, and anhinga have been flying around with nesting material. It's been a lot of fun having a good deal of action to shoot.

Last autumn at Bosque del Apache NWR in New Mexico I sought out a new location to shoot for pre-dawn; this was near the flight deck. The sky was great--orange bordering on red with snow geese flying by. This is not my usual style but I thought to give it a chance (as I did a number of mornings on my trip to Bosque this past year); I am just beginning to go through the images.....
