Leopard in the Grass

Finding a leopard is considered a pretty big deal in Kruger (though my group actually had more luck with leopards than with cheetas which are much more rare in the Sabi area). Several teams were searching high and low for this beautiful girl after she was spotted late one night by a watering hole. When we finally found her it was a pretty exciting moment! Our truck followed her for quite a while and watched her stalking a group of guinea fowl.

I couldn't believe how oblivious the leopard (and lions) were to the safari trucks! My camp had a good policy of allowing only 2 trucks to observe any of the Big 5 at one time, and we literally ran over trees and crashed through rivers etc. following the leopard - she didn't even seem to notice us! I could swear that she did look me right in the eye once as she walked past the truck :-)

Greetings all! After a SUPER long flickr absence, I'm finally back :-) I just took a 2 week trip of a lifetime to Botswana and South Africa and thought it was about time that I start posting some pictures! I spent the first week on the Okavango River in Botswana on a Bird photography workshop, and the second week in Sabi Sands South Africa on safari. I had an absolute blast and can't wait to return someday!

I was THRILLED to see an entire pride of lions one day in Sabi - the group included 2 adult males, 3 adult females, 3 "teenage" cubs, and this tiny baby cub! The lions are not scared of the safari trucks at all and occasionally came so close that I could have reached out and touched one! (of course that would be a bad idea ;-) This is one of my favorites from the trip but there are more to come!

I've been spending a lot of time at the Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary over the past few weeks searching for birds and enjoying the views. Well, the birds haven't been going very well, but I did get to experience this amazing sunset last weekend which made the trip worthwhile :-) And I figured, sunsets are pretty cliche!

On the 4th of July some of my family came to visit me in my new city of St. Louis. A lifelong fan, my dad bought us tickets the the Cardinals game that day. The game was moving slowly, when suddenly this rainbow came out over the stadium. At literally that moment, the Cards scored the first and only point of the game!! I'm not making this up :-)

I thought that this nice symbol of hope and promise was perfect for today when we remember the horrible event of 10 years ago. It is my hope and prayer that we never experience anything like that again.

If you've ever been to the Bellagio in Las Vegas then you know that they decorate for each season in some extravagant way. This summer's theme was Americana and these huge balloons hanging from the ceiling were part of the decor. I always love seeing what over the top idea they will come up with, and this has to be one of my favorites!

I thought this worked perfectly for the "Balloons" scavenger hunt category.

There is nothing like summer, even if it is 2.5 million degrees outside :-) I mean seriously, this weather is out of control! I usually love summer but this is even a bit much for me! I snapped this shot of two friends enjoying a glass of wine a few weeks ago before it got to be quite so hot. This lake is one of the beautiful things to enjoy at the STL botanical gardens, and i can't wait for it to cool off a bit so that i can visit again!

I did quite a bit of editing of the original photo as you can see below.

So it may be silly, but I think the gateway arch is pretty darn cool. It is just so huge and beautiful and random....there is something about it that I really like! Seems like such a strange thing to build. And, since I'm trying to learn my way around town it helps to be able to just look up, see the arch, and know which direction I'm heading! Anyway, I'm pretty sure that the Arch shot is uber cliche, and this is just one of many I've taken so far. I promise not do the full arch 365 like I threatened before, but I can't promise that this is the last you'll see of it!

You had to know once I moved to St. Louis the arch would be making an appearance! This was taken from the rooftop of my downtown apartment building where we have a pretty nice (though partly obstructed!) view of the Gateway Arch. The city shot fireworks on Saturday night and will shoot them again tonight, all part of of the big Fair St. Louis celebration for the 4th. We had a ton of rain yesterday so hopefully the sun will stay out today as I'm headed to the Cardinals game this evening!

I'm taking a quick break from packing today to upload a photo for texture Tuesday! This is the pink daisy that made an appearance a couple of months ago re-worked with some texture from Kim Klassen. I'm neck deep in boxes and stuff getting ready for the big move on Friday - thankfully I have a very good friend over who is braving the depths of the kitchen and packing away! Two people packing is so much better than one!

Hello flickr friends! I have finally returned after a super long absence and I've definitely been having some flickr withdrawls. Several big things have happened since my last post but the most exciting is:

I PASSED MY BOARDS and am now a board certified radiologist!! Yea! I couldn't be happier or more relieved! A big thank you to everyone out in flickrland who encouraged me, prayed for me, and sent me nice notes to let me know you didn't forget me while I was gone.

Now I'm ready to be back and can't wait to start using the camera more often. I took this photo last week while staying with my sister and bro-in-law in Oklahoma. My sweet niece Harper loves her swimming pool and my great dane niece Lily just wishes she could hop in too. Not sure if there is room for such a big puppy...

Edited with Anna Gay's actions and taken while laying in the grass...perfect for sliders sunday and worm's eye view sunday :-)

Digging back into the archives today - this is another fence shot from my trip to Quebec in January. It already seems like soooo long ago and I'm really ready for another vacation!

I've been MIA lately and haven't picked up the camera in weeks - sometimes life just gets really busy and you have to focus on things that aren't too much fun. The test I've been studying for since January is only a short 2 weeks away so it's crunch time..or at least it should be! I'm having major study burn out so I hope everything I've learned over the past 5 months just sticks in my brain somehow :-)

One day at Dauphin we went to the beach to practice flight shots on the pelicans and sea gulls - some of the only birds who fly slow enough for me to get a good shot ;-) I was surprised to find out that pelicans are actually quite pretty up close! I thought I would post this one today since I like the bokeh scene in the background. There are a ton of little seagulls on the rocks but I never got a decent shot of any of them.

Greetings flickr friends! I have become such a bad contact over the past couple of months, but hopefully I'll be getting back into the swing of things soon. It's been a busy time as I've settled into St. Louis, but I'm loving it here. My new job is so wonderful and I think that the city is just awesome. I've finally been able to take the camera out some over the past few weeks so I'll be posting more in the upcoming days.

I hope you are all well - I've been keeping up with your streams even though I haven't been commenting much. They have all been fantastic as usual!

One of the first things I did after moving to STL a few weeks ago was google the botanical garden. Boy, am I glad I did!! It is seriously one of the most AMAZING botanical gardens I have ever seen! The grounds were massive and there were so many flowers, ponds, and birds too! Every Wednesday night there is a free concert in the gardens and you can bring food and drinks and sit on the lawn. Very very cool and I can't wait to go back!

I've always wanted to try a flower photo from this perspective, but being as tall as I am I'm never able to get down low enough. Lucky for me these were some super tall flowers...and I think I only raised a few eyebrows when I was laying on the ground to take this shot!

I was really excited to get a shot of the state bird of Oklahoma on my last trip to my sister's house! I used to see these guys flying all over the place growing up, but I've never had a good picture. Well this isn't the greatest but I'm glad to have it anyway! I wish he had chosen a more beautiful place to sit, but I tried to help him out with a new backdrop :-) Original photo in comments.

A few weeks ago I visited St. Louis on an apartment hunt. While I was there I got the wonderful news that I passed my boards so I treated myself to dinner at a little French cafe I found in the Central West End. This broccoli quiche was delicious paired with a yummy greek salad and I enjoyed every bite! In fact...I may treat myself to a little quiche again tonight!

In honor of father's day I thought I'd post a picture of my brother-in-law Richard with my sweet niece Harper. Richard is the world's best brother-in-law and is shaping up to be a pretty wonderful dad too! This weekend he and my sister drove hours to Alabama just to work like dogs helping me pack up, then drove on to St. Louis with me and helped move all my stuff into the new apartment before heading home to Oklahoma this morning. I couldn't have done it without them! Now I'm living in a huge pile of boxes and am playing on flickr instead of unpacking!

It's amazing how much more fun summer can be when you aren't studying or working on the weekend and when you have a nice swimming pool to enjoy! My friend Marion and I decided to drive to her parent's house in Tennessee so that we could mooch off the country club swimming pool . Temperatures in the high 90s have us pretty desperate and desperate times call for desperate measures!

Since floppy hats, big sunglasses, and porch swings are pretty darn cliche I thought this would be a good post for cliche saturday!

As many of you know, I'm about to move from Birmingham AL to St. Louis MO. A couple of weeks ago I took a short trip to the city to search for an apartment and couldn't resist taking at least a few fence pictures :-) I loved the blue of this fence with the traffic lights in the background, and I'm looking forward to many more St. Louis fences to come!

Hope you all have a great weekend - I'm hoping to ride out some of our 99 degree weather at the pool!

Another old shot from my trip to Universal Studios last fall. It is cloudy and gray where I am today which is probably a good thing - that should make it easier to stay inside and study! (yeah right) I'm doing the double post for worm's eye view sunday and sliders sunday today....let the procrastination begin!
