Amsterdam Houses has 13 buildings, some 6 and some 13-stories high on 9.49 -acres. The 1,080 apartment complex houses an estimated 2,382 persons. It was completed December 17, 1948 and is bordered by West 61st and West 64th Streets, from Amsterdam Avenue to West End Avenue in Manhattan.

The Frederick Douglass Houses are a public housing project located in the New York City borough of Manhattan, in the Manhattan Valley neighborhood of Upper West Side, named for civil rights pioneer Frederick Douglass. The actual buildings are located between 100th Street and 104th Street, to the east of Amsterdam Avenue and the west of Manhattan Avenue. The complex is owned and operated by the New York City Housing Authority.

The original portion of the complex consists of 17 buildings — 5, 9, 12, 17, 18, and 20-stories tall — completed on May 31, I958 on a 21.76-acre (88,100 m2) site. The development includes 2,054 apartments housing some 4,588 residents.

"St. Bernard of Clairveaux had little use for vast, immoderate churches. Yet he has an imposing Victorian Gothic sanctuary in his honor at 330 330 West 14th Street. The parish was organized in 1868 in a wagon factory on West 13th Street. The present sanctuary was built from 1873 to 1875 to the designs of Patrick C. Keely, architect of the similarly detailed Church of the Holy Innocents. The church of St Bernard was the first church dedicated by an American cardinal, the newly created John Cardinal McCloskey. In 2003, it became the home for the nearby parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe and was renamed Our Lady of Guadalupe at St Bernard's."
