Today marked my 5th year of attending the Early Bird Launch at our local balloon & wine festival. Instead of shooting the event from the ground as I had the previous four years, this year I booked a flight for myself and two friends, Myra and Debbie. Although apprehensive, my excitement won over any fear I had. I was comforted by the fact that our pilot, Doug, had 36 years of balloon experience under his belt, and is a regular participant of the famous Albuquerque balloon festival. The balloon lifted up gently and gracefully. I was hoping we'd take off over the lake for some fabulous balloon shots, but the heavy fog prevented that, and we had to move to a sunnier location. With the exception of the occasional whooshing of the burners, it was very quiet and peaceful . . . until the end! On our second tank of propane, Doug announced we needed to find a place to land quickly. There were no breezes at our elevation, so we had to do a "bomb drop" to get down, and we were soon approaching the sage-and-boulder-dotted landscape. At this point, the wind picked up and began to push the balloon and basket. Pre-flight we had been told that in case of emergency we were to bend our knees and brace ourselves against the basket. Little did we know, we'd be using those instructions. As we approached our landing, Doug called out, "We're going to hit that rock! Bend your knees and protect yourself!". We ended up grazing the rock, then bump, bump, bumped across the sage. The balloon's canopy pulled the basket and its passengers onto its side and into each other. The ground crew came and righted the balloon, pulling us to a better location, but the wind dumped us again. We all began laughing and ended up crawling out of the basket on our hands and knees, then celebrated the end of our trip with a glass of traditional champagne! Sunset at the side of the road by Pelzner Farms. This was several weeks ago, and now those sunflower heads are heavy and ready for harvest. (Vicki, Denise, Karol & Tom . . . these are the sunflowers I showed you. :) )

I just discovered this beautiful new addition to wine country, Ponte Vineyard Inn. I think I'm going to be roaming around there a lot with my camera. :) This shot was earlier last night, before the really heavy, black clouds rolled in (see the photo below or above in my stream).

At Calloway Winery last night. The harvest has begun, and I watched as workers brought up several loads of freshly-picked grapes. The four dots in the center are lights on the trailers used to transport the grapes.

When I looked @ the photos from my husband's Cyprus trip, I found he also had undiscovered photos of his Father's Day hot air balloon ride over wine country. This is a photo he took with his p&s; I just edited in LR. This will probably be the last of his photos I upload; I just thought this was a cool shot looking down from his balloon with the other balloon and South Coast Winery/vineyards below. I've marked the spot where his pilot landed in the narrow parking lot of the winery, almost taking out a small tree . . . all just part of the adventure! (He loved his ride, btw.) All those little square terra cotta roofs belong to villas/guest houses at South Coast Winery.

In Monte de Oro's wine cellar. Our tour guide, Tony, used a long thin tube, called a wine thief, to siphon samples of the wine directly from the barrel into our tasting glasses.

Shadows and light at play on the balcony of Wilson Creek Winery. We had a very enjoyable moment yesterday when, thanks to Jeff and Tom, had an opportunity to meet and talk with Rosie Wilson, the founder of Wilson Creek, as she was tending her rose bushes planted around the winery's Creekside Grill. She was so gracious, giving us the history of the winery, and also took group photos with us. Tom has a beautiful portrait of her here:

Monte de Oro's list of wines, including percentage of brix (relative density scale used in sugar and winemaking industry, it indicates the percent of cane sugar (sucrose) by weight [grams per 100 milliliter of water] in a solution or juice of unfermented grapes in degrees Brix (°Bx).), the estimated tonnage and (not shown), the actual tonnage. MDO is a beautiful winery with an intriguing view to the wine cellar through a glass floor in the wine tasting room, but not a great place for a conversation . . . very loud!
