The riverside trail ends where canyon walls are within touching distance of each other and become gorge-like. To venture further, it's necessary to wade and swim in water, into 'The Narrows' where Virgin River knives through towering mountains..

However, this marks a proper starting point of a full day hike for me, heading in the opposite direction (south), retracing the riverside trail back to the main canyon, and Springdale ~8 miles away.

Day 1 in Zion National Park: mouth of the Narrows -> Springdale.

I took the park shuttle to the end of the main Zion canyon and hiked the entire way back to Springdale, following the flow of Virgin River. Along the way, I went on a couple of trails off the canyon including the riverside walk which leads further into the northern part and upstream of the main canyon, and the starting point of my hike.

The trail is pleasant to walk especially during a lovely spring late morning. You get an immense feeling of scale, being closely flanked by gigantic sandstone walls most of the way. (please view in larger size)

Street Scene, Koyama

A very long, pedestrianised indoor street in Koyama 小山, near the Musashikoyama 武藏小山 subway station. The station sounds like a place in martial arts novel.

We were going to a tempura place along this street, hoping for a spot of unconventional breakfast. But it was shut. We ended up with toast and coffee in a cafe.

After the tea ceremony, we head to the bridal suite, along the naturally lit corridor. I love these corridors at the Andaman. Nice to step out of the room, immediately into fresh air and greeted by the rainforest and wildlife.

The couple is looking well; their red vibrant costume juxtaposing with the green nature. A marriage made in Malaysian nature!

Sunshine, Rannoch Moor

Last day, some sunshine at last after two overcast and wet days of walking. A quick trip up to a small hill (more boggy trekking) to have another view of Rannoch Moor. On a day like this, the Mamores and Lochaber hills can be seen looming over the horizon. The paths are the dirt treks connecting the station with various places including the hostel. The path that snakes into the hills beyond goes all the way to Fort William!

Temple, Takaosan

There are several temples in Takaosan Yakuo-in 藥王院, contrasting in colour and architecture. This one is buddhist in origin, more ornamental and colourful than the shinto shrine further down the hill.

Saw him earlier on the path, breaking his brisk walk briefly to rub an octopus-like statue (supposedly for good luck) before journeying on. As if that's his daily routine. Bumped into him again further up the hill, taking another break and sipping tea in a shrine. Full of attitude.

Beyond the chair lift, various paths lead to the top of Takaosan. One passes through a lively temple complex (shinto and buddhist): Takao-san Yakuo-in Yuki-ji (高尾山藥王院有喜寺).

Most shinto shrines I visited in Tokyo have a pavilion (temizuya手水舎) for washing hands and mouth. The custom (temizu手水) is a traditional etiquette observed at shinto shrines, which also includes a specific way of paying respect at main shrine buildings. This involves bowing, hand clapping and praying. I didn't do them properly at Meiji Jingu. Observing the custom in practice here, being passed from one generation to another.

First visited: Meiji Jingu on 小妹's suggestion. Situated in a forest, the shrine is peaceful despite its popularity. It is a contrast and an escape from the hustle and bustle of the nearby streets of Harajuku.

Scene in Harajuku during a balmy and busy Saturday morning, outside of the rail station (Yamanote line). Meeting 小妹 at 11am (outside Gap) to spend a day around this neighbourhood. While waiting for her, I scouted out the nearby Jingu Bashi (cosplay site) and Takeshita Dori, a narrow street full of boutiques, cafes and fast food outlets targeting Tokyo's teenagers.
