What to "shoot" when the weather's crazy and all other signs of wildlife have disappeared....well, bison, of course. In the Northeast section of Yellowstone, you can always count on plenty of these majestic creatures to enjoy and help pass the time when nothing else is happening. 5 more days and a wake up...cooking's done, suitcase is partially packed, and all the camera gear is ready to go. Time now for a little relaxation :-)

Rain, sleet, snow, grapple, or sunshine...didn't matter to us; any day's a good day when you're in Yellowstone :-) One of the many stormy scenes we were treated to last spring, and instead of allowing the weather to disrupt our plans, we found ways to take advantage of it, like capturing this snow storm as it moved in. Mike probably got tired of hearing me say, "stop, that's a great atmospheric comp"...LOL!!!!

7 days and a wake up....yikes; guess we better start packing!!!! Have a great Friday; will be busy the next few days, so I'll catch up with everyone as I can. Thanks for all your visits and comments :-)

In 2013 The iconic T. A. Moulton barn celebrates it 100th birthday.

Started out of necessity to shelter his horses against the harsh winters of Western Wyoming and Jackson Hole, Thomas Alma Moulton didn’t know he was building a future landmark to a nation and mecca for photographers to come to. He and his two sons, Clark and Harley worked the land to provide for their families. They worked together along with their neighbors to carve out a meager existence along what was known as Mormon Row. Started in 1913, it took many years for the barn to be in its current form. First built as a square box, later on the peak and one lean to side was added. Later, when more room was needed, the other lean to side was added. This was a functional working barn. It was never intended to be the most photographed barn in America. source: www.themoultonbarn.com

Wisps of Smoke

Going through the archives again today; sorting & backing up to external hard drives. And since we are only 34 short days away from our next trip out west, I thought it would be fun to post a few that I never got around to posting the first go round.

Sunrise on top of Dunraven Pass in Yellowstone National Park during the fall of 2010...and here you see some of the remnants of the Antelope Creek fire, leaving a trail of smoke throughout the valley below. Funny how something so destructive can be so beautiful & intriguing :-)

One of the many spectacular views that can be seen from the Going to the Sun Road in Glacier National Park....the sunlight was a bit harsh (middle of the day), but these views were too good to pass up. Another one of those "stop the car" moments....we were driving along the Lamar Valley, searching for bears or wolves, and I just happened to spot this small herd of bison making their way across the valley, and they just happened to be walking behind one of those spring "puddles"....right place, right time. Not as sharp as I would have liked, but I shot it handheld and they were a long way off. 3 more days till pure bliss!!!!! New Arrival

One of the many highlights of our spring trip to Yellowstone was seeing this little bison calf right after it was born. We were traveling through the Lamar Valley, and I noticed an adult bison near the road with afterbirth still hanging from its underside. We backed up and parked in a small pull out directly across from the bison and immediately noticed the little one nursing....talk about an exciting encounter. Minutes later this little orange cutie emerged from under its mother to make it's first appearance....so neat & amazing to see!!!!! Note - image is cropped so as to spare everyone the gory sight of mom's underside :-)

Think He Sees Me

Always interesting to watch so many different species of wildlife coexisting...sizing each other up....maintaining their defenses and being ever cautious of what the others agenda may be. After chasing off three bull moose near Pebble Creek, this grizzly ambled along the valley, stopping periodically to check out this bison that was grazing nearby. At first glance, it doesn't appear like the bison is even paying much attention to the griz, but if you look closely, you can tell that he is keeping a weary eye on him.

Another hot one today, with temps reaching 106; that's 8 days in a row....and to think we complained about the snow and cooler temps during our visit out west...LOL!!!! Have a great Friday, and thanks for all your visits and kind words :-)

Epitome of Cute

Watching these little bison calves is so much fun. They are so full of energy and life unlike their adult counterparts. They run around in circles, jump all over the place, and chase each other throughout the valley. This shot was taken last May during our trip to Yellowstone, and yes, it was nearly the end of May, and they were still getting snow. A little bit of extra magic added to an already magical place :-)

Close Encounter

Hiked to the Hidden Lake overlook on this particular day (we weren't able to go on to the lake due to grizzly activity), hoping to see mountain goats. When we arrived, we were a bit disappointed that there were none in the area, and there was a lot of haze in the distance due to all the forest fires around the area. We decided to sit and relax for a while and before long, we spotted several goats across the valley from where we were. They slowly made their way towards the overlook, and I was quite surprised at how brazen they were, walking right up to people, literally within feet of them as they meandered past the overlook and headed on to "greener pastures". Apparently, the 25 yard rule doesn't apply to them....LOL!!!! And of course, I just had to take advantage of this close encounter by capturing a few images :-) Have a fabulous weekend, and thanks for all your visits and comments!!!!

Thanks to my friend, Bev, for reminding me about this spot....I was inspired to photograph this old wagon and two others after seeing them for the first time several years ago from another flickr friend, Dakota Imagery. Can you just imagine attempting to travel cross country these days by wagon? Sure would save a lot of money on gas, car payments, etc....LOL!!!! Who am I kidding....I am quite comfortable with having all the modern conveniences :-) Have a great Wednesday; thanks for all your visits and comments!!!!

How about a bit of minimalism....caught a glimpse of this Pronghorn resting on top of this ridge in the Lamar Valley and thought about how tiny he looked against the wide expanse of the valley. The sky was dull, gray, and boring, so I decided to add a bit of color :-)
