John Dean, local author and Chair of Darlington for Culture, has chosen May’s object of the month.

“For me, the exhibit which means the most is the photograph of Herbert Wolfe, on the main platform. In the late sixties, Herbert recruited a group of local volunteers to save the dilapidated North Road Railway Station. One of them was my father Stan, then the local librarian. In time, their efforts led to the creation of the railway museum and my father became chair of trustees, a role which he performed for many years. The station always remained close to my dad’s heart. He died in December 2011 and seeing that picture of Herbert reminds me of my father’s role in saving the station.”

DARRM: 2011.13 - Darlington Railwaymen’s Carnival costume

This Native American costume was worn at the Darlington Railwaymen's Carnival by Mr William Treslove. William’s father, also called William, worked at Stooperdale Boiler Shops and collected thousands of pounds for charity as one of the original organisers of the Darlington Railwaymen's Carnival.

He sewed and made the costumes from hessian flour and sugar sacks, which were dyed. He collected and bought the beads throughout the year and the children helped.

Between 1924 and 1939 the Railwaymen’s Carnival raised money for the Memorial Hospital in Darlington. The week long festivities included parades and fancy dress with prizes for the best original and comic costumes, sports events, music and dancing, a fairground and a treasure hunt.

The costume is on display in the ‘North Road Works 1863-1966’ exhibition from 6th April to 2nd June 2013.

Sam Goodall, a volunteer at the museum, has chosen the object of the month for March:

“This is a stone bust of Henry Pease the fifth son of Edward Pease. He was a member of the Quaker Society like his father. He was a Director of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, but he is probably most famous for the foundation of Saltburn-by-the-Sea. He was also a Liberal politician who was the MP for South Durham between 1857 and 1865.

I have chosen this for ‘object of the month’ as the history and local importance of Henry Pease to the North East is large and because it is an interesting and well made bust. He has relevance in terms of the railways but also politically.”

The bust is on display at Head of Steam Museum.

Gillian Savage, a visitor assistant at the museum, has chosen the object of the month for February:

“As I walk along the platform my eyes are always drawn to the colourful, beautifully painted railway posters. They just conjure up a very romantic image of travel on the railways in a by-gone age. Day trips to ‘Brid’ or Scarborough, fish ‘n’ chips on the seafront, buying mementoes and then falling asleep on the way home. As a part of the social history of the railways they are an invaluable resource because they show how people viewed railway journeys – as a glamorous way to escape their ordinary lives and a chance to explore other areas.”

‘See Yorkshire By Train’ by Alan Carr Linford was produced for British Railways (North Eastern Region) in 1963. Linford, born 1926, studied at the Royal Collage of Art from 1943-47 and was an active painter in the 1960s. The coloured lithograph depicts Yorkshire scenes with diesel multiple unit passenger trains. The top illustration shows a train running along the North Sea coast near Whitby, the centre shows a train crossing Knaresborough viaduct and the bottom view shows a train in a wooded landscape.

The poster is on display at Head of Steam Museum.

North Eastern Railway Pupils' Association C.H. Swan Marksmanship Challenge pewter tankard with a glass bottom inscribed with ‘19th HOLE’.

The North Eastern Railway Pupils' Association was founded in 1922 as a social association for past and present railwaymen who had been taken on as pupils of the Chief Mechanical Engineer. The group enjoyed annual dinners, motor runs, other sporting and social events and discussing life on the railways. The final reunion lunch was held in 1982, sixty years after the association was established.
