The lower photograph is somehow unbelievable: in September 1944 in the apocalyptic last months of WWII these German architects are having dinner peacefully in their clean white shirts while discussing the reconstruction of the bombed german cities.

1953, nur acht Jahre nach Ende des Krieges und zwei Jahre vor der Gründung der Bundeswehr, war "Manöver" offenbar schon wieder ein positiv besetzter Begriff. Wie hätte er sonst Teil eines Mottos einer Modeveranstaltung werden und im Plakat durch lustiges Schlagen der Kriegstrommel symbolisiert werden können?

1953, WWII only eight years ago, this poster for a fashion event adopts the military term "manoeuvre" for the show and the beating of a war drum seems to be something smart.

Travertin ist ein heller aus Mineralquellen stammender Kalkstein mit einer etwas faserartigen porösen Oberfläche. Er war besonders in den 1950er Jahren ein beliebtes Material für Oberflächenverkleidung bei Geschäftshäusern.

Travertine is a limestone with a fibrous surface structure formed in mineral springs. It was a popular building material for cladding surfaces especially in the 1950s in Germany. This Hamburg office building dates from 1957.

Nelson Algren - Der Mann mit dem goldenen Arm, rororo 194, 1956. German translation of The Man with the Golden Arm. Cover art by Karl Gröning jr & Gisela Pferdmenges. rororo starting in 1950 was the first real pocketbook series in Germany. Up to 1961 the books had a small sticked-on cloth spine (Leinenrücken). Today they are collector's items, not hard to come by with the exception of some titles.

Hans Albers, son of a Hamburg butcher, was one of the most popular actors of the 1930s and'40s in Germany. In 1943 he was unwilling to vacate a hotel room for the Bulgarian king. "I'm a king, too" he said when he was interrogated by the Nazi Gestapo. For this daredevil attitude, which he showed in his films and his life, he was adored by the public.
