I think the city got complaints about these guys who hang out in this tiny park smoking. Their solution was to rip out all of the benches and tear out almost all of the shrubs. Sure, why not make it impossible for everyone to enjoy the park. Meanwhile, the smoking guys just stand or sit on the curb....

Yes, this is the former "Filene's Park." Hard to believe that it ever contained benches and large flower and tree planters, with little lunch spots on the edge of the Filene's building. People would be sitting on the park seating (including the stone bench surrounding the subway entrance) to wait for a friend, eat a snack, or have a smoke or phone chat. This shameful central-city blight is FOUR YEARS OLD now! The only action is from the hardhat who watches over the site. Here he drags away some old tarp after replacing a section of cover on the fence surrounding the pit.

This shot is surprisingly difficult to get because when the men play their mahjong here in Chinatown, they usually have a half dozen (or more) other gents packed around the players, watching every move. These men had not yet developed a fan base, so I could take their picture.
