spied these trees trooping over a paddock just out side six penny handley ,at first glance i mistook them as hawthorns but on closer inspection they are too tall and the lichen festooned twigs show a different formation ,looking forward to giving them a bash for bugs later in the year dorset/wilhshire boders england uk

found a new wood to explore that is said to span 5 continuous miles across the high ground of cranborne chase, there are reports of odd carcasses found here that are believed to be the work of a big cat, all i can say is it is a very very big wood

wandering along the edge of a spruce plantation and noticed this young beech glowing in the darkness while overhead there was the shrill contact calls of the tit tribes along with the chatter of redpoles and siskins foraging high within the canopy,then close by the deep hollow hoot of a tawny owl followed by an answering call from deeper within the wood ,but no sign of a big cat

I was probably around six when i first visited this wood with my father who was photographing the badgers at an extensive set centred around a massive fallen oak

I have a vivid memory of crouching in the dark listening to the owls hooting right overhead and the swift passage of hoof and paw across crisp dead leaves as unseen creatures passed by in the darkness

,looking back this was one of those defining moments of childhood which opened the doors to the secret world of the wild wood

I find the hollies of the new forest more impressive than those of other woodlands i have visited , which i imagine is due to a combination of age and the browsing of livestock ,many of them show the gnaw marks of horses and the holly stands provide shelter for them in bad weather, maybe the reason why this particular tree has grown so oddly ,hollies are said to be able live 500 years, but usually does not reach 100.
