I'll be the first to admit it, one of the things I love the most about large format is the ability to control image perspective and shape! Aka, I'm a stickler for straight lines now.

Few of my budget 8x10 lenses have the movements necessary to achieve straight lines in all scenarios, the 14" Red Dot Artar having the most movements of the entire kit. The image circle on this lens when stopped down to f/16 covers even the silliest of camera movements. So naturally, for a structure a little over 4 stories tall, this was the lens for the job.

Downtown Lima Photowalk

Ah x-ray film, the cheap date of the large format world. Whenever I'm in a hurry/pinch, loading up a bunch of film holders with this super-cheap emulsion doesn't even require a second thought. Heck, at ~$0.30 / sheet, I can even bracket!

Such a last minute occurrence happened several weeks ago when fellow film shooter Amanda Fields invited me to a downtown photowalk in Lima, OH. I wasn't sure what to expect, so I loaded up 6 sheets of x-ray film for the quick like 2-3 hour photo outing.

The Lima photowalk was tons of fun! There were all sorts of photographers present, from hobbyists to professionals, film shooters to digital. Many new friends were made, and some pretty cool old structures were shot. Definitely going back later this month for a little more urban exploration.

An upload from the Cuyahoga Valley National Park can only mean one thing, yet another NE OH Meetup has passed!

May 11th - 13th, again hosted by the ever-kind John and Dolly Powers, a slew of traditional film photographers met up to shoot, share prints, learn some new techniques, and shoot some more! Very seldom are these meetups boring, for each morning I found myself waking up ~5 AM just raring to get over to the park at first light to score a sweet exposure.

I'm not going to go into gross detail, but if you know the area, you know this particular wide angle image as well as the time of day it was taken already breaks a multitude of park laws. Enough said. ;)

Pipes and Meters Downtown

I'm officially having too much fun with this x-ray film! At < $0.25/sheet, I'm now taking two shot at a time! This affords me the luxury of having a backup sheet of film, just in case something goes wrong during development. Today's photo, was the direct result of taking that second shot.

You see, this super cheap x-ray film is orthochromatic, aka they can't see any red light whatsoever. Well, guess what color these bricks, pipers, and meters are? This exposure needed a heck of a lot of light, and it seems like of the two, this exposure with a ton of direct sunlight was the only thing giving density to the negative.

One-A-Day, 9/20/11 The National Dachshund Races

That's right folks, the big 'burb of Findlay, OH is home to the final circuit race of The National Dachshund Races. Two days out of the second to last weekend in September, folks from all over bring their tiny little long dogs to have them compete over a 50' dash. In addition, there's: a costume contest, popularity contests, Longest Wiener, Fattest Wiener, Tiniest Wiener, the list goes on and on.

One-A-day, 9/19/11 Maria's Executive Barbershop

With the help of yesterday's barber, Bobby C, I was guided several blocks away to a barbershop located in the basement floor of a large skyscraper in the middle of downtown Cleveland. Maria's Executive Barbershop is an appointment only, high class, full service barbershop featuring everything you could possibly want out of the barbershop experience. For one flat rate, you can: get a hair cut, shave, facial, shoe shine, or even just relax on the couch and pour yourself some Cognac. No matter what the service, Maria does it with a pleasing, professional demeanor.

As you can see, lighting was dim, and using the mirrors in the room to my advantage, I was trying to get the most out of the shot without going "too dark" with the super-wide angle lens.

Hope everyone's ready for some more barbershops, because here they come!

This is the ninth, and final, in a series of images I was allowed to take over the course of a long afternoon at the Allstate Barber College in downtown Cleveland, OH. For the past 35 years, All State has been serving the community, providing experience for hundreds of barbers each year while offering quality, discount hair styling to all that stop in.

Apparently, the one day I'd chosen to photograph this barber college was the day before midterm exams! Stoops! >__< It explains the bewildered looks I received from many students when I asked them for a portrait, but of them, some were still happy to oblige. Did I mention there's always a need for female barbers in Ohio? ^__^

Some days, whether it be lack of motivation, bad weather, or circumstances beyond my control, One-A-Day shots will occur close to home. Just a few steps into the back yard of my apartment, are these large, lovely trees near Eagle Creek, part of the Blanchard River. A storm was brewing and the "calm" had just set in with very little wind and a few drizzles of rain. It was the only break I'd had all day to shoot, so I gladly took it.

Nearly every Friday during the summer time, old downtown Findlay, OH has some community activity geared at getting as many people downtown as physically possible. From chalk art to hot air balloon races, and even antique car shows, if it's Friday in Findlay, you know where you're going!

While on my way to go grocery shopping one afternoon, I drove past this tree that had recently been struck down horribly by a stray bolt of lightning. The larger part of its branches missed the house whose yard this was by nearly 1 meter. Scary stuff.

At long last, we've reached the end of my mini-series of shots taken at the Cuyahoga Valley National Parks. Nearly 1 block from yesterday's photo, I just had to have a picture of these wicked looking roots! The way they were clinging on to this upward slope, the way one of the roots swirled downward into the ground. The detail in them was just mesmerizing, and made the super long wait for the exposure all the more worth-while.

When you're in a very inspiring area such as the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, it's actually a challenge to limit one's self with a set number of photos. Every rock you step over or tree you pass shares something unique. Having already walked two miles with the 55lb. 8x10 setup, I was starting to tire, but couldn't head back without first grabbing a few more shots. This one was going to be challenging, b/c I just had to have some detail in the rocks leading up the trail (even at the cost of flaring/nuked highlights).

Early last month, I was invited out to John Powers' house, walking distance from Cuyahoga Valley National Park, to partake in a meetup of like-minded, crazy film photographers. The meetup was fabulous, many a gorgeous print was shared, I got to try a whopping 7x17" camera, and even got taught first hand how to develop film by inspection. All for the low, low price of absolutely FREE!

Today's One-A-Day image was fairly straight forward, and even cliche if you're a resident or student. This bridge here in town has been shot so many times by so many different people, at first I thought why even bother? Well, certainly none of them had tried it in 8x10, and definitely not during the mid-day sun.

Nothing like abnormally nice winter weather to head out with the 8x10 and play around with more x-ray film!

Being limited to an orthochromatic sensitivity with Agfa green x-ray film, it's possible to get skies that aren't ridiculously blown out, but careful metering, along side a yellow filter, are needed.

One last little note, this will be the last image in which I use Pyrocat HD as the developer for this particular film. I've found one that works much better, and is almost half the cost to make!

It's amazing to thing I've been avoiding more "cliche" shots of Findlay, OH for the first nine weeks of the project. If there's anything more iconic about Findlay than the courthouse dead center on Main St. and Main Cross St., I'd like to know.

And now for a random tip, don't pick 3:00pm on the busiest street in town to take a picture. I waited well over an hour for traffic to go just the way I wanted. >__<
