Cassowary

The Cassowary is a very large flightless bird that lives in the tropical forests of New Guinea and Northeast Australia.

I encountered this one in a dry river bed when making a solo walk on a trail near the jungle lodge. At the river bed I stumbled upon this nice colourful specimen, looking for fruits on the ground. I took carefully my camera, increased the ISO to shoot handheld, took my first shots, then approached and always came closer and closer. She did not seem to mind my presence. This is the closest I came, then I decided to go back.

I followed the jungle path until I came out again at another place at the dry riverbed. It was getting dark very quick in the forest, the sun was already under. It looks like I was walking around in circles. Looking for the real "exit" (somewhere a hidden turn) I suddenly saw on the mid of the narrow jungle path 'another' cassowary. Very likely this was the same one that in the meanwhile moved to here (as they are very territorial). What to do next? He (or she) was coming into my direction, I returned and he was following. I did not really want to go into that direction as that may even lead me further away from what I thought was the right way. So I was going right against him (have you seen his toe, they can really kick ass with that). Suddenly I saw him going down through a dry creek, while the path had a small bridge over it. I decided to cross him while he was down in the creek and while I was going over the bridge. So I run over it. He was a bid surprised and crossed me running in the other direction. One obstacle passed.

Of course I ended up again at the dry river bed and still had to find my way out. Finally after several rounds and attempts to find the exit road, with many scratches from the thorns, I found the right track. Just in time as it was almost completely dark, and I had no torch with me ...

They build large community nests like apartment blocks that can become huge in size and weight up to 400 kg. After a while the whole nest and branches can collapse under its own weight.
