Don McCullin is one of Britain’s greatest photographers. For his latest project he has photographed archaeological remains around the Mediterranean. On a recent visit to the Museum, to coincide with the opening of a major exhibition of his work, Don made a personal selection of photographs from the National Media Museum's collection, revealing how these sites were recorded by earlier photographers such as Francis Frith and Maxime Du Camp.

Don McCullin: "I have chosen this picture because it has got tremendous mood. The lighting is beautiful and the figure on the left is really more like a painting than a photograph. It's got all the qualities of something I would be really pleased to photograph myself."

Don McCullin: "It goes without saying that this photograph is very biblical-looking. You couldn't get more closer to looking like Jesus Christ than this man. To find people like this to photograph would be so pleasing. There must be thousands of beautiful, hidden photographs like this in the Collection that you have here. This is only the tip of the iceberg but what a beautiful portrait it is."
Inventory no: 2002-5054/7

The clergyman and his wife had attended a seance at which a voice was heard, claiming to be their stillborn daughter - whom the 'spirit people' had named Rose. The voice asked them to sit for a psychic photograph, telling them she would try to appear in it.

'Rose' is not clearly apparent in the image. The image of the man was identified as the long-deceased father of the clergyman. Hope may have asked the clergyman to bring a photograph of his father, under the pretence of using the image to contact the spirit world.
Henry Peach Robinson was a pioneer of combination printing - joining multiple negatives to form a single image - although not the first to establish it. In 1855 he opened a photographic studio in Leamington Spa. He became one of the founding members of the Birmingham Photographic Society in 1856. In 1864 he moved to London and began writing influential essays on photography. He opened a new studio in Tunbridge Wells around 1869 and in 1870 became vice-president of the Royal Photographic Society. He resigned from the Society post in 1891 and instead became one of the early members of the rival Linked Ring Brotherhood.
