Is this little guy making a fashion statement or is he preparing for cold weather? :)

I hadn't seen this one before. It looks like a jumping spider with a shell on it's back. Any arachnologists out there?
To give you a sense of his size, he's about half the width of the blade of grass he's sitting on.

At first you see the Spiderwort flower (Tradescantia) from a profile detail, but look closer and you'll see it's protector just below it.

The detail was tough to capture since the slightest whim of a breeze can move these delicate petals.

Jumping Spider on nature's mixmaster

I decided to post this image in b&w. It gives the image a more surreal emotion, and, ironically a timeless (futuristic) feel. All the blades of grass give this scene a feel of an interstate expressway with exits in various directions. This spider is apparently considering going off-road.

Jumping Spiders are extremely small. Note this one is just the width of the blade of grass it's perched on. Jumping Spiders are the largest family of spiders, composed of over 5,000 species.

Spider in Grass.
I like the intricacy of the archways of the blades of grass. This spider paused for me many times. He was much more patient than I had to be to get these images.

Location: Arkansas.
