View from the Porto riverfront south towards Vila Nova de Gaia. The boat is the kind that was once used to bring port wine down the river from the vineyards in the eastern part of the country, near the border with Spain, to the lodges in Porto. They now use trucks and trains, but keep a few of these anchored near the touristy areas.

Looking up into one of the small domes in the roof of St Peter's Basilica. The camera was on the floor, pointing up (n.b., people are not allowed to be sitting on the floor of St Peter's, although cameras are); since I couldn't look through the viewfinder to compose the image I aligned the camera using only the grid formed by tiles on the floor. It's amazing to me that the dome is almost perfectly aligned to that.

Looking up and out from the floor of the new Louvre entrance pyramid, designed by I M Pei. Built as a new "grand entrance" because the original entrance to the Louvre palace was too small, it was apparently considered an insult to Paris initially. I like the juxtaposition of modern and classical elements.

Apertures through the lens

Windows in the facade of the Arab World Institute building in Paris, designed by Jean Nouvel. As far as I could figure out, the openings are actually apertures that open and close. They also give the whole building a decidedly "islamic carpet" look.

P.S.: excruciatingly witty photography tie-in in the title: CHECK.

Chandelier and interior of the dome in the Berlin cathedral. I've kept it rather warmed because I liked the look it produced in the chandelier.

Not anymore a "castle" so much as a palace on a hill; many of the standard defensive fortifications were replaced over time by these renaissance-style palatial buildings. Some of the older turrets are still visible.

Reichstag dome

Looking down from one of the walkways inside the new dome of the German Reichstag. It was designed by Norman Foster to replace the old dome which was damaged in a fire in 1933 and further during world war II. Some of the seats of the German parliament are visible through the window in the floor.

There are two spiraling walkways along the sides of the dome, with entrances 180 degrees opposite each other, that lead up to the top. The fact that they're tilted relative to everything else, and visible basically everywhere you look inside, gives an interesting feel when one is inside.

Bath Abbey ceiling

One thing I really like about Bath's abbey is that there are numerous windows in the main space, which makes it feel much lighter and more welcoming than other churches I've been to. Also, this fan vaulting in the ceiling is exquisite, and one of the best examples of it in England.
