NARAC Predicts Atmospheric Releases

Scientists in the National Atmospheric Release Advisory Center (NARAC) command room at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory actively monitor gases emitted from Kilauea, the youngest and southeastern most volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii, in 2009. NARAC opened its doors in 1979 during the Three Mile Island nuclear meltdown. Now, 30 years later, scientists are using advanced models to predict the impacts of atmospheric, biological, chemical and radiological releases.

Sequoia Supercomputer Dwarfs Simulation Speed Record

The 96-rack IBM Blue Gene/Q Sequoia supercomputer at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is a 1,572,864-core system dedicated to classified work in support of the Stockpile Stewardship Program. In April 2013, the system ran a record-breaking simulation, computing 504 billion events per second, dwarfing the previous record set in 2009 of 12.2 billion events per second. Sequoia currently ranks No. 1 on the Green 500, as the world's most energy efficient computer, and No. 1 on the Graph 500, a measure of the ability to solve big data problems, and No. 2 on the Top500 list with sustained performance at 25 petaflop/s. The system ranked No. 1 on the industry-standard Top500 list of the world's fastest supercomputers in June 2012 with sustained performance of 16.32 petaflop/s.

As a graduate student at UC Berkeley, Herb York worked in the Radiation Laboratory during WWII. After the war, he was part of the group converting the 184-inch cyclotron back to research uses.

Although Ernest Lawrence (left) and Edward Teller (center) co-founded the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, it was Herb York who did the planning and legwork that made the new lab possible. He served as the first director.

Herb York was born November 24, 1921, in Rochester, New York. He earned his BS and MS degrees at Rochester in 1943 and a PhD at the University of California Berkeley in 1949. He would later become the Livermore Lab's first director.

Berkeley's Radiation Lab provided scientists to help with diagnostics for Los Alamos Greenhouse Test. The team, headed by Herbert York and Hugh Bradner (back row, left and second left), included many scientists who would become the first employees of the Livermore laboratory.
