It has been a while since my last post. Believe it or not, I am still on the road! My wife and I reach our home tomorrow, back to Oregon! We can't wait to be back with friends and family. It has been an amazing trip. Over the past 2 months we have seen some amazing parts of our country. I can't wait to share it all with you!

My first evening in the grand canyon. The light after sunset was amazing on the canyon walls. This was one of only a couple times that there were any clouds in the sky during the 4 days we where there! I definitely want to go back someday, but to the North rim!

Well, I have photographed dozens of other places and several beautiful skies since my last post, but I just had to share this shot from yesterday. We took the photographer's tour through upper Antelope Canyon…and it was well worth it. Our guide ushered people out of our shots and threw sand into the light beams for us. He knew exactly where the amazing light beams would be at the exact time. The wind was really blowing up above and sand is pretty much lodged into unobtainable places in my camera now, but I really didn't care at the time. Amazing experience.

Chisos Mountains at Sunrise

After a gorgeous sunset the previous evening, I decided to see if my luck would hold for sunrise in the Chisos Basin…which it did. This is Big Bend National Park - way out in the middle of nowhere, Texas right on the Rio Grande and the Mexican Border. It's a massive park with many different climates. We camped at the higher altitude in the basin with somewhat cooler temperatures. Had some gorgeous sky while staying here and I can't wait to share more of it with you.

I have a TON of shots to go through from the last week. We spent time camping at Big Bend, Guadalupe Mountains, Carlsbad Caverns, White Sands, and Gila Cliff Dwellings. I'm exhausted and going to bed. We are currently staying in a hotel in Tucson for a couple nights to recoup before heading out again. So, hopefully I can post another shot tomorrow night, also.

Anyway, this shot was taken in Guadalupe Mountains National Park. These dunes were found on the West side of the mountains and this shot was taken at sunset during a spectacular skyshow of light and rainstorm. I had fun exploring these dunes. It's not a very large field, but plenty of photographic opportunity. So far for our trip, this was the most beautiful the sky has been, for sure.

Spending another unplanned night in San Antonio waiting for our Jeep to be given back to us :-( I took this shot while we strolled along the river walk in downtown San Antonio on Saturday night. It was pretty cool, although I don't think that river is really a river anymore...the water definitely seems to come from an unnatural source.

First stop on our trip across the country. We had a great time walking the streets of the French Quarter. Then drove across the bridge to get this scene. The conditions were remeniscent of the clouds over Nashville that I photographed last July.

Jupiter Colony

We headed down to the beach this morning. Thought we would enjoy one last day there before we leave Monday. We drove all the way down to Jupiter for the rocks. First time I had been there and I was running around trying to get a good comp, but the color ended up being to the South rather than over the horizon. Had a good morning standing in the 80 degree water anyway :-)

Farewell Florida

Next week my wife and I are moving out of Florida. Our final destination will be our home, Oregon. But, it'll take us 7 weeks to get there. We are taking a route roughly through a good chunk of the Southwest, across the Rockies, and a small portion of the plains on into the Northwest. We are really looking forward to taking time to see country we haven't ever seen before. What will we miss about Florida the most? The beach, of course.

Also, if you're interested, I just published a blog post recounting the second half of our trip in Feburary to the National Parks of Florida. I will most certainly be updating my blog during our trip so check back for more!

Moat Walk

This was my favorite part of the Dry Tortugas. This walk around the fort, specifically. On one side, the shallow and warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico and on the other, a 150 year-old fort looming above the calm water. For this shot, the clouds were moving quickly across the sky into the west toward the fading light.

Access Archways of Fort Jefferson

The arches of Fort Jefferson really inrigued me. I spent quite a bit of time shooting them from different perspectives at different times of the day as the light changed. The best part of spending so much time shooting them: no one was around. After the ferry left, 12 of us campers remained and had the whole place to ourselves.

Took the dogs to the beach a few weeks ago. It was a windy, cold day for Florida so we only saw a couple other people. There aren't many rocky beaches or dog friendly beaches here, but this one happens to be both so we visit here often.

Here's another shot from Dry Tortugas. This is inside Fort Jefferson on Garden Key. There were hundreds of these arches on each level of the fort. Since we got to camp here overnight, we basically had the whole fort to ourselves so no one walked into my shot :-) Oh, and the evening light added some nice dimension to the arches.

Fort Jefferson was just basically one of the most awesome places I've ever been. So isolated, unique, and solitary. I had a lot of fun making some night shots. We had to stay on the side protected from the Westerly wind, which is the side that was modernly developed for the staff to stay in. Before visiting, I assumed the rangers were roughin' it way out here. But, come to find out, they built individual condos into the fort complete with satellite TV and internet. They still use the old cisterns for fresh water and generators/solar power given them all the comforts of home...even cold beer. There was even a hammock situated in one of those archways. Talk about paradise...

Another shot from a beautiful sunset in Key Largo. I was really lucky to get to this spot just in time for this color. We parked at a dock next door to a closed off lot. I walked along the fence of the lot to this private beach complete with fire ring and palm trees!

It was actually quite chilly on this evening. The wind was blowing strong from the East with temps in the 50s, but I still enjoyed getting some shots on this secluded beach.

Here's another shot from my recent trip out to the Dry Tortugas. I wish I had brought a second battery with me, because after taking a couple 20+ minute exposures overnight I barely had enough juice to get some of these awesome sky shots. After it died, the sun continued to do a lovely dance above the clouds.

My time in Dry Tortugas has easily made it my favorite National Park. It's just so unique and isolated, and after all the non-campers left and just a dozen of us remained we really got that feeling of isolation. I loved shooting these arches in the evening sun when the light provided more dimension and depth. Also, there was no one around to walk into my frame :-) I wish we would have spent more than one night here...

Key Largo Sunset

Just finished processing this shot of one of the most beautiful sunsets I've photographed here in Florida. Finding this spot was a perfect happenstance. We were driving from Homestead to Key West this evening and I was checking out places on google earth (as Jenn was driving) along the highway to stop ant shoot the sunset. I found this closed off lot on the satellite, but we discovered it was all fenced off when we stopped. We parked at a little dock nearby and I walked along the fenced off lot toward the coast to find this little private beach. Only thing that would have made this more perfect was a fire in that ring...
