I thought I met Tattoo from Fantasy Island when I stepped out of our car in front of The Majestic Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Everything in that hotel including its staff uniform follows the British colonial tradition. I asked "Tattoo" to pose for me with the old train station behind. I figured it would be more authentic to process his image in B&W.

I took this shot at a pedestrian overpass near the central train station in Beijing. As you can see, there 's no need for any GND filter or HDR when shooting toward the sun. The smog also helped produce a warming effect to the image.

I walked up to this spot in one winter and there were ice spikes hanging from the wall. It was an amazing sight hard to describe. It 's just too bad I did not have my camera with me. Last year, I came back to the very same spot and experienced the weeping tears dripping on my head. I tell ya, Zion is my Disneyland. But I have yet conquered Angel's Landing.

Weeping Rock View

This is the view from the weeping rock in Zion NP. I took a 3 bracketed shots handheld and then processed with Photomatix and LR5 Beta. I still don't like the resulting halo that is quite visible on top of the canyon to the right.

Ipoh El Capitan

On our ride back from Cameron Highlands, Malaysia, we passed by this little town called Ipoh. At the outskirt of the town, there was this limestone hill hovering above a Buddha temple. The sheer vertical drop of its cliff reminded me El Capitan in Yosemite. If you look closely, you can see a Buddha statue and a bat cave about half way up the cliff.

A plant sprung out of the lava field in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
This is the 3rd time I process this image but now with Photomatix. It was taken in 3-bracketed shots handheld with built-in camera flash. If I were to set up my tripod, that light might have been gone.

Shooting into the sun is not easy. I took 3 bracketed shots handheld to create this HDR image as the sun was going down quickly. While I was setting up for my shots in a hurry, I forgot to take out the protective UV filter in front of my lens. As a result, there were more flares. I could have easily stamped them out. But for the sake of authenticity, I just left them alone.

I took this 3-shot bracketed HDR image handheld in an unincorporated area near Livermore three weeks ago. The image has been sitting in my hard drive until I finally made my commitment to Photomatix. I have compared it with other HDR software and I think by far Photomatix does the best job in minimizing ghosts and halos.

As I was about to leave the fire jam at Palace of Fine Arts, a group of maritime cadets in plain clothing walked by and asked me to take pictures of them. I agreed. So I swapped in my 24L and took this shot handheld. Afterward, they insisted to pay me ten bucks for my effort. I told them it 's not necessary but they insisted anyway. Actually I was more mindful about the surroundings as I was about the only photog left after this shot. I was thankful for not getting robbed that night as I had to walk back to my car alone in the dark with several thousand dollars worth of gear behind my back..
