Golden ort loom (ort ball detail)

Unhindered by Talent posted a photo:

Detail of the ort ball and weaving from one of Sue's ort looms, small wooden squares with threads made from tied together orts woven across them.

"Ort" is a very old word that once meant a scrap or remainder of food from a meal. It is now used by needle artists to refer to the little scraps of thread that end up getting clipped off. Sue has been collecting these from needle artists all around the country, often through my mother, who regularly attends national and regional seminars.

In this piece she ties the little orts together to make a longer thread, and then weaves that on a simple, hand-made loom, and uses the remainder to create a brightly colored "ball of twine" which she perches on top.

Each collection of orts ball represents a person, or possibly even the remainders from a single project from a person.

This is a piece WeatherGrrrl made several years ago, but never got properly photographed. We borrowed some fancy "pro" lighting gear to photograph several new pieces for submitting to shows, and we took the opportunity to backfill this omission as well.

The piece is a large "map" made through a combination of printing, by-hand pen and ink, and tea stains. The paper is then cut into rectangles which are glued to black book cloth in such a way that the piece can then be folded up for storage in its little custom box. It has long been one of my favorite pieces of hers, so it was fun to have a chance to bring it out and rephotograph it.

I ended up making two collages. I prefer the look of this one, but the other one is more square which means we can submit more detail for shows that limit images by pixels in the longest dimension (a very common approach).

How do we wish to be remembered?

Unhindered by Talent posted a photo:

In just over a week the voting populous in the state of Minnesota will have the opportunity to vote on two vicious and mean-spirited amendments to the state constitution. One purports to "defend" marriage by amending the state constitution to preemptively disallow legalization of gay marriage, something that isn't actually legal in Minnesota at the moment. The other is a remarkably restrictive "voter ID" amendment that purports to "solve" a fraud problem in a state with some of the cleanest election record in the U.S., while in fact disenfranchising numerous of the elderly, low-income citizens, young people, the disabled, and citizens of color. (See The League of Women Voters for details.)

If these issues concern you, if gays kind of creep you out or you're worried about voter fraud, that's fine - we can agree to disagree. But do you really believe your concerns warrant amending the state constitution? The people driving both these proposals are the philosophical descendants of those who fought (and often still fight) to limit the rights of those who aren't "like us". Is that how you wish to be remembered?

How, in fact, do we wish to be remembered?
How do we wish to be remembered?

While we were in Arkansas visiting my parents last week it was too hot to bother pretending to fish, but Dad, Tom, and I did go for an evening boat ride on Beaver Lake. This was the sunset that greeted us as we can back in to the marina after a few hours on the lake.

A detail of a wonderful (and presumably very old) platform cart in the walkway around the cloister of the Toledo cathedral. The center of the cloister was a nice garden space, and the walkway around it was full of all kinds of weird, unlabeled odds and ends like this cart and these old metal bowls.

This will be the last of the Spain photos for a bit - we're headed off to see my folks and I won't have access to this library while we're away. Huge thanks to Tom for being such a big help in pushing this along!

A group of folks celebrated what I assume to be a wedding outside of the clock portal of the Toledo cathedral as we're about to go in for our tour around the church. I love the looks on some of their faces.

And that's my wonderful wife and son on the right heading towards the door :-).

No pictures were allowed inside, so nothing from indoors. It would quite stunning, however.
