A last view of Wray Castle before we headed down to the lake shore.
After Dr Dawson's death in 1875, when he was 96, the estate was inherited by his nephew, Preston Rawnsley. In 1877 Preston's cousin, Hardwicke Rawnsley, took up the appointment of vicar of Wray Church (next to the Castle and built at the same time by Dr Dawson). In 1929 Wray Castle and 64 acres of land were given to the National Trust by Sir Noton and Lady Barclay.

After a varied history, Wray Castle has recently come back under NT Management - without any of the furniture or dressing of a grand house that we usually associate with NT properties. Until decisions are made on its future, this is an NT property with a difference! In the library we got to add our favourite book to the collection by colouring in the wall fresco. I chose Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy :-)

Amongst the design oddities our guide pointed out to us was this window at the front of the tower. Despite its position and the spectacular views it afforded, access to the window was inhibited by the location of the fireplace!

The first floor landing of Wray Castle, with four bedrooms coming off the central section. The ecclesiastical theme to the interior architecture is still very much in evidence.

Beatrix Potter was born and brought up in London. Her parents took her on summer holidays to Scotland, but when the house they rented became unavailable, they rented Wray Castle. Beatrix was 16 when they stayed here in 1882. Her parents entertained many eminent guests, including Hardwicke Rawnsley.
His views on the need to preserve the natural beauty of Lakeland had a lasting effect on the young Beatrix, who had fallen in love with the unspoilt beauty surrounding the holiday home. She bought nearby Hill Top in 1905 with royalties from her first few books and when she was 47, married and moved to the Lake District. She bought much land in the area, including most of the land surrounding Wray Castle, though she never owned the castle itself.

It's not hard to see where the inspiration for the interior design of Wray Castle came from! Dr Dawson also built nearby Wray Church.

The architect employed by Dr Dawson is believed to have been H.P. Horner, also of Liverpool, and this is his only known major commission.
I love this view looking up from the base of the central tower.

Gothic Revival

Wray Castle is not a real castle but a private house built in the Gothic Revival Style in 1840. It was built for Dr James Dawson, a retired Liverpool surgeon, and is now owned by the National Trust.

This archway is down by the Fell Foot boathouse, providing rowing boat and kayak hire, boat launching facilities and lake cruises.

3698 Repulse

The Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway runs through the picturesque Leven Valley at the southern end of Windermere, and features a number of restored steam locomotives.
Named after the World War II battle cruiser, Repulse had an arduous and adventurous career working for the North Western Area of the National Coal Board.
The locomotive was completely worn out mechanically when withdrawn from service in 1975 at Whitehaven, following closure of the Ladysmith washery and the lifting of the lines between there and the Haig Colliery.
The engine was purchased from the scrap merchant just a week before being due to be cut at the Ladysmith site, and delivered to Haverthwaite in August 1976.
The renovation proved to be something of a challenge, but now repaired and equipped with a vacuum brake system, Repulse has proved to be a valuable addition to LHR's locomotive stock.
