Solenostemon is a genus of perennial plants, native to tropical Africa, Asia, Australia, the East Indies, the Malay Archipelago, and the Philippines. They are commonly known as Coleus, a name which derives from an earlier classification under the genus name Coleus.

One of a pair of Rosso Veronese Recumbent Lions by Petrelli, 1848, in the garden outside the south façade of Kingston Lacy. I thought the dahlias made a nice backdrop :-)

Chumon Gate

Angela at Kingston Lacy, on the path leading to the Kitchen Garden, via the Japanese Tea Garden.
The Japanese garden is approached at the top of the Lady Walk through a large (2.4m wide) thatched Chumon gated entrance with timber and bamboo panels in the style of the Meimei-an teahouse entrance in Matsue, Japan. In this instance the gates were a direct copy of the Meimei-an entrance although the thatch is to a local design.

We made our way through a section of the Kingston Lacy gardens called the Blindwalk. The Blindwalk contains flowering shrubs and groundcover plants.
Thanks to Brian for identifying this as a Lacewing Hydrangea!

Hill Top includes a good example of traditional cottage garden, containing mainly old-fashioned flowers such as honeysuckle, foxgloves, sweet cicely, lupins, peonies, lavender and philadelphus.

The enormous and beautifully crafted Treehouse in The Alnwick Garden is built from Canadian cedar, Scandinavian redwood and English and Scots pine, from sustainable resources. It’s high in the treetops in a copse of mature lime trees, and looks as if it’s been there forever.
The site on which The Alnwick Garden is built has had a colourful history, with former Dukes of Northumberland creating gardens for Alnwick Castle, with the leading designers of their day, including Capability Brown.

And so, 36 hours later, the thaw begins. The cat tracks across the garden will soon disappear. For now, there's the lovely glisten of the afternoon sun on the snow.
