Believe it or not, the City actually issued a yard sale permit for this building at 4930 S. Ashland, even though yard sales are only supposed to be held on residential properties with front yards and, as you can plainly see, it has none. Neither do any of the other storefronts, both occupied and abandoned, on this stretch of street.

The applicant, who lives in the second-floor apartment had her twice-yearly yard sale, though, her overflowing tables wedged in between the overhang of the vacant storefront and the sidewalk. The city might want to start requiring pictures of an actual house or two-flat with a YARD before approving yard sale applications. Just sayin'.

So many of Chicago's old churches have been torn down; it's great to see this onion-domed example soldiering on, despite having a vastly different demographic from the European immigrants whose nickels and dimes built this house of worship.

Men Can Cook - Spaghetti and Meat Sauce

You'll need:

2 cloves of minced garlic
1 large chopped onion
1 large chopped green pepper
1 large can diced tomatoes, drained
1 large can tomato sauce
2 teaspoons oregano
Garlic powder
Onion powder
1 pound of ground beef

Brown the ground beef and garlic in a Dutch oven; add the chopped onion and green pepper, and tomato sauce and simmer 10 minutes until the onions turn translucent. Add the diced tomatoes. Add onion powder, garlic powder and oregano to taste, cover with lid, turn the heat way down and let simmer for 45 minutes to an hour. For best taste, refrigerate and serve the next day, so the flavors have a chance to meld.

Serve with grated Parmesan cheese, garlic bread and a glass of your favorite red wine.
