A break from the "person or persons juxtaposed with amusing backdrop" series. Though I must confess, for me this picture would be nothing without the black and white Mondrian in the background.

By the way, I am the subject of an interview currently being featured in the "Streets of Colour" group here. In retrospect, given the name of the group, the answer I gave to the question "do you prefer colour or black and white?" was perhaps not the one they were looking for - and perhaps I shouldn't have offered such a black-and-white-heavy selection of images as examples of my favourites of my own work (a selection discreetly enriched with colour images by the interviewer), but it's always flattering when interest is shown in my "work".

December 29th, 2011 - New York, United States

By rights, this scene had "colour" screaming all over it - sure, the eye itself was in black and white, but the flames licking the bottom of the wall were bright red and yellow; the brickwork at the top was red-brown; even the road surface at the bottom was green not grey. But somehow, once I loaded it onto my computer, it only worked in monochrome. By the way, for those who are wondering, I believe the artwork was a hangover from Hallowe'en.

December 24th, 2011 - New York, United States

For the first couple of days of my end-of-year visit to New York, I was convinced I was being stalked by a man in an Elmo suit. Everywhere I went, he seemed to be there. Eventually, of course, I realized that there were several men wandering the streets of New York dressed in the same shaggy red costume, all of them hoping to collect a few dollars in return for posing in tourists' photographs. I even came across one sat on a grassy knoll in Central Park, Elmo head by his side, feverishly counting dollar bills. Sadly, in the photo I took of that scene, you couldn't see clearly enough what it was he had in his hands, otherwise it would have been just about the perfect shot.

December 29th, 2011 - New York, United States

The new year may be only four days old, but I have a feeling this may well sum up what's ahead for me in 2012. There are a lot of questions swirling around in my brain right now - the place of photography in my life being just one of them. If only I could lightbox them to see them more clearly.

A belated Happy New Year to everyone kind enough to visit my stream despite my infrequent posting, incidentally !!

The Girl With The Matchstick Men Tattoo

December 28th, 2010 - New York, United States

I first spotted this woman and her rather unusual tattoo about half an hour before this photograph was taken, but I wasn't happy with the couple of shots I managed to get, and had more or less resigned myself to another lost opportunity when I came across her again as she took in an exhibition of contemporary photography. Though I could swear I had been utterly discreet the first time I photographed her, this time it was almost as if she wanted me to get a good clear shot of her tattoo - she seemed to position herself in front of me and deliberately linger long enough for me to frame it exactly as I wanted.

By the way, the work she is viewing is the video "Despair" by exciting young photographer Alex Prager.

December 29th, 2010 - New York, United States

Finally getting round to posting some of the pictures from my New York trip over Christmas and New Year. The harvest was not as rich as I had hoped - somewhat counterintuitively, perhaps, the heavy snow that fell while I was there proved not to be terribly conducive to my style of street photography - but I got a few shots I'm happy with, of which this is one.

Belated Happy New Year to everyone kind enough to come by here - may 2011 be full of peace and photographic goodness !!

Black On Black (Woman Looking At Abstract Painting)
Truly the last refuge of the disillusioned street photographer is the museum.

Apparently, when Ad Reinhardt's Abstract Painting was first exhibited in 1963, at least one MOMA member cancelled his membership in disgust. Reinhardt explained that the picture contains three distinct shades of black, which only become visible after prolonged staring at the work. What struck me, looking at it almost fifty years later, other than it considerable and surprising beauty, is that visitors wearing several different shades of black themselves see no irony in their dismissive cries of "Jeesh, what a stupid idea!!"

October 29th, 2009 - New York, United States

This was genuinely - no cheating, I promise - the first photograph I took with my new Leica D-LUX 4. I'd bought it in the duty free at Geneva airport, and when I arrived in New York in late afternoon, I headed straight out in the hope of taking a few shots before the daylight faded completely. As you can see from this shot, it was already getting quite dark before I spotted my first potential subject. It's a testament to the camera's qualities that the resulting image is - with the exception, sadly, of some of the details of the woman - so crisp.

As for the woman's laugh, I'd love to be able to say that I had just charmed her with some suitably gallant compliment. But in fact she was unaware I was taking this shot - she's actually laughing somewhat contemptuously at a man with whom she appeared just to have had an argument, and who was firing back a volley of insults at her as he slunk away into the gathering gloom.

November 1st, 2009 - New York, United States

To be perfectly honest, I've had enough of my New York photographs, and you probably have too. Nevertheless, I still have a few that I want to try out here, and I figure the only thing that's going to force me to overcome my end-of-year fatigue and get out and shoot some new stuff will be if I have nothing left in reserve to post, so I may well post a couple at a time over the next few days. I'm also feeling about ready for a purge, so don't be surprised if a number of shots mysteriously disappear from my stream between now and Christmas. Incidentally, these are all good signs : frustration with my stream often means there is a burst of inspiration around the corner. And I'm going to be in London between Christmas and New Year...
Red Hot Riding Hood

November 1st, 2009 - New York, United States

This picture was actually taken a couple of minutes before this one. I've held off for some time from posting because it seemed rather uninspired to return to the scene of an earlier crime, but I do rather like it. Contrary to appearances, the woman is not hiding her face from me, but rather hoping that her boyfriend will leave her in peace for a while.

I think this looks best on black.

Of course, as a huge Tex Avery fan, my favourite version of the Little Red Riding Hood story has always been this one.

I loved the light here. And the reflection in the store window. And above all, the care with which the girl was tending to the mannequin's hair - I stopped and watched for a good minute or so before I took this photograph, and she never once was distracted from her work. I'm just not convinced it makes a great photograph.

November 5th, 2009 - New York, United States

I passed this rather forlorn looking young man sitting in the back of a stationary removal van on my way up to the Whitney to see the Georgia O'Keefe exhibition, which I hated - her colour palette leaves me cold, I'm afraid. When I came to the same spot on my way back downtown, an hour later, there he still was.

The title for this photograph is taken from the autobiography of Lauren Bacall - which, rather bizarrely, is the book lying at the young man's feet. Perhaps he's not reflecting on the futility of his life, after all. Perhaps he's just reflecting on the fact that they don't make them like this any more.
When Love Breaks Down

November 1st, 2009 - New York, United States

I've been holding back on posting this one - and I must admit to still feeling ambivalent about doing so now.

When I saw this girl, I was drawn by the way she seemed to be protecting herself against the cold wind that was gusting through Manhattan that day, and I thought it would make quite an amusing shot. It was only when I came to process it and viewed it large that I realised that she was crying - there's a teardrop on her wrist (only really visible at original size), her eyes are reddened and there are more tears rolling down her cheek.

I prepared a black and white version, which somehow neutralised the emotional content (for one thing, you can't see that her eyes are red) and which would be a more discreet image to post, I suppose. But I like the tones in the colour version too. And it's real. Too real perhaps.

Absence makes... the heart lose weight, yeah.

What Is The World Coming To ?

an untrained eye posted a photo:

November 2nd, 2009 - New York, United States

Ruskin famously complained that the new craze for photography - he was writing in the 19th century - meant that no-one really looked at anything any more : they simply pointed their cameras at whatever was before them. He believed that everyone should learn to draw and that tourists should sketch what they saw instead of photographing it - because to draw something, one is required truly to observe it, to look beyond the superficial.

These days, people don't even seem to want to take the time to look properly at works of art in galleries or museums. They race through, presumably so they can say they've "done" MoMA or The Louvre, in the same way they've "done" New York or France, simply by virtue of having set foot there, waved their cameras around and clicked the shutter a few times.

I swear, it's the new form of cultural tourism : you go to a gallery, and instead of looking at the works of art, you simply photograph all the descriptions.

I can just imagine the conversations around the world, as these intrepid travelers, returned home, proudly recount their adventures to their friends and families :

"Yeah, and then we went to this museum where we saw this really great painting of a flag."
"My, that sounds fascinating. And which flag was it supposed to be ?"
"Oh, it was that famous one. You know - from that really big country. The one next to Canada. You know the one. It's on the tip of my tongue. Wait, I think I have a photograph of the details here..."

What Is The World Coming To ?

November 1st, 2009 - New York, United States

My latest New York trip seems to have yielded a preponderance of street portraits, rather than any wider-angled or longer-ranged shots. I would tend to attribute this to the fact that I'm still feeling my way back into street photography - basically, it's easier to react to the immediate presence of an interesting face at close range than it is to anticipate or spot the sort of juxtaposition of person and place that often makes for the most satisfying images and is usually taken from a slightly greater distance.
