Everywhere I went, he seemed to be there. Eventually, of course, I realized that there were several men wandering the streets of New York dressed in the same shaggy red costume, all of them hoping to collect a few dollars in return for posing in tourists' photographs. I even came across one sat on a grassy knoll in Central Park, Elmo head by his side, feverishly counting dollar bills. I'd bought it in the duty free at Geneva airport, and when I arrived in New York in late afternoon, I headed straight out in the hope of taking a few shots before the daylight faded completely. As you can see from this shot, it was already getting quite dark before I spotted my first potential subject. It's a testament to the camera's qualities that the resulting image is - with the exception, sadly, of some of the details of the woman - so crisp.<br /> <br /> As for the woman's laugh, I'd love to be able to say that I had just charmed her with some suitably gallant compliment. When I came to the same spot on my way back downtown, an hour later, there he still was.<br /> <br /> The title for this photograph is taken from the autobiography of Lauren Bacall - which, rather bizarrely, is the book lying at the young man's feet. Perhaps he's not reflecting on the futility of his life, after all. He believed that everyone should learn to draw and that tourists should sketch what they saw instead of photographing it - because to draw something, one is required truly to observe it, to look beyond the superficial.<br /> <br /> These days, people don't even seem to want to take the time to look properly at works of art in galleries or museums. They race through, presumably so they can say they've "done" MoMA or The Louvre, in the same way they've "done" New York or France, simply by virtue of having set foot there, waved their cameras around and clicked the shutter a few times.<br /> <br /> I swear, it's the new form of cultural tourism : you go to a gallery, and instead of looking at the works of art, you simply photograph all the descriptions.<br /> <br /> I can just imagine the conversations around the world, as these intrepid travelers, returned home, proudly recount their adventures to their friends and families : <br /> <br /> <em>"Yeah, and then we went to this museum where we saw this really great painting of a flag."<br /> "My, that sounds fascinating.
