A constant source of silly grins on my face, the male Rufus' always come to investigate what this large thing (me) is. I never get tired of getting buzzed by them.

Photographed in Dixie, WA at the home of Tom "The Hummingbird Man" Lamb. Tom was featured on 'Northwest Backroads' a few years back. It had been a goal of mine to meet him someday. Done!

Our resident male Anna's Hummingbird, "Hector", is now waiting out a horrific winter storm. What a tough little bird this guy is. This is the second year he's stayed with us.

Last year we had a male Anna's Hummingbird winter over in our garden. We named the little fella 'Hector' and took care of him as best we could during the snow, the ice and the bone-chilling temperatures. It seems he's returned. Probably knows a good thing. Definitely displaying attitude!

A Pair of Wet Rufous Hummingbirds

This pair of female Rufous hummingbirds arrived here yesterday in a pouring rainstorm. They immediately tucked into the feeder and started getting their fill. You'll notice how they are absolutely soaked.

This isn't the greatest quality video - it was hand-held, shot through a double-paned window with horrible lighting. But it's pretty cool to watch the hummers!

The Calliope Hummingbird is a very small hummingbird and the smallest bird in North America.

This little guy was seen in southeastern Washington State in the town of Dixie.

Evenings are especially fun when the hummingbirds start their squabble over who's going to sample the flowers. This feisty little female has declared the garden to be her own and spends hours chasing every other hummer away.

The hummingbirds are very active in the garden now with several visible all the time. It makes for some really interesting interactions with them. While this one was content to check me out - one made contact with my wife's head while she was taking pictures.

Another favorite blossom for attracting hummingbirds is the 'Bee Balm' (Monarda didyma). As you can see, the hummers like it!

The 'Hot Lips' plant (Salvia microphylla) really attracts hummingbirds. This plant is in a planter box on the deck which brings the hummers very close to us while we're sitting enjoying the evening.

It's incredible to think that this nest is no larger than an egg cup and probably contains two to three eggs no larger than the size of a 'Jelly-Belly' (jelly bean). It's made up of moss, lichens, spider webbing (you can see some of it in the lower right of the picture) and other soft things.

Pretty cool, isn't it?

Always a joy to see, the iridescent red/gold flash will often give away the position of the male Rufous.

Amazingly enough, I managed to spot a female Rufous Hummingbird on her nest while taking a walk in the Nisqually Wildlife Refuge. I don't know how I'm going to find it again next time - it's so well camouflaged! Somehow I think I'll be staring at it a lot in the weeks to come...

One Soaking-wet Hummingbird

Today marked the return of the Rufous hummingbirds. Too bad it was as wet as it was today. As you can tell - this was one wet hummingbird.

So far today we've counted 3 female Rufous, 2 male Rufous and our resident male Anna's hummer, 'Hector' are all competing for the feeders.

It's gonna be a fun season!

This is 'Hector', the hummingbird that wintered-over in our garden. Through some pretty brutal cold temperatures and bouts of snow he seems to have endured fairly well. Now, as the other hummingbirds migrate back north, it will be interesting to see if "his" garden remains "his" after all.

This is 'Hector'. Hector has been wintering over in my garden and is doing quite well. If you look a bit deeper into my photostream you'll see him catching snowflakes with his tongue. Shot in HD (be sure to click on the 'HD' button within the video and go to full screen!)

(Sorry about the camera shake - it was an impromptu hand held shooting with a 400mm lens!)

I'm so happy to report that 'Hector', my resident Anna's Hummingbird, has survived wicked winter weather overnight. Despite the 20-degree temperatures, blowing snow with winds gusting to over 30-mph, Hector was on his branch this morning waiting for somebody to replace the frozen bottle of sugar water with something more liquid.

I was so happy to see this little guy this morning. Glad he made it through the night. What a tough little creature!
