Sorceress Workflow: Note

Lucia Cyr posted a photo:

"It is said that the sorceress of the Dusk Order can be found in every major kingdom known to man, where they bide their time pursuing their myriad agendas."

Work in Progress Notation: One of the most frustrating things, if unavoidable, is detail degradation. It can be very disheartening to spend a lot of time working on small details that dissolve when transferred to SL.

The images on the left are the base texture renders in Zbrush (Which means that it is just the texture in fullbright, no actual light or shadow rendering.) Even here, a lot of detail is lost from the original. The image on the right is in Second Life, where another chunk of details have been smoothed away and lost.

Comes with the territory, but it can be frustrating sometimes! If something important is lost however, that is a very good time to open the texture back up in photoshop for some detailing to bring out those important details.

Set is done! Now to get it into SL. Please ignore the over sized chest, it is easier to scale up than down, so I made it larger than necessary to accommodate for this.

Scale Surcoats

Lucia Cyr posted a photo:

"Lauded for their versatility and the speed with which they can be put on, scale surcoats are a common sight on the field. Durable, but still highly flexible, they are popular amongst cavalry and footmen alike."

Having way too much fun with these. I've wanted to make them for /years/... but SL was never really capable of pulling them off like I wanted. Even with sculpts. Now? Can't wait.

This is a work in progress series of shots that I thought some of you might find interesting.

The far right is the base model before coloring, the results of said coloring being the one to it's left. That copy is rendered with lights, shine, shadow, etc. All the wonderful things that will never show up in SL!

Fortunately, I am able to bake a lot of those details into a solid texture, which is the "Texture only, no rendering" piece.

Finally, the last one, (far left) is the result of cleaning up the texture in photoshop and adding some of the modular elements made for the other surcoats. The result is one configuration of a hundred thousand or so possibilities.

As I will never in a million years make nor want to make a hundred thousand textures, even if I could afford it- the final set will be much more simple by necessity. However, I am going to experiment with commisions with this piece. So if you want one with Pink scales, a white belt, cloth instead of chainmail, no armor plates, with blue cloth that has gold trim.... with heraldry of your choice on the chest?

Can be done. I've made the entire piece to be modular from the ground up. It will however come with a cost that reflects the time and work it takes to make a custom variant.

So, we'll see!

Preview of a current project. I am trying a new technique with this one that should allow me to make several high def variants instead of simple recolors. It's going well so far.
My first color choices are, unsurprisingly... inspired by playing Mass Effect 3 last night. Go figure.

Whew! What a nightmarish project! Really glad it's finally out. Was a lot of fun, but was definitely something of a trip! We had an event with a giant maze (seen in the picture) with traps, and puzzles and magical pick axes for destroying walls!

Everyone had a blast, so I am really happy. Even if not a single one sold, haha. C'est la vie.

"It is said that the Zoneless wear the faces of their first kills. Many dismiss this as legend. But there is a grain of truth to be found in every tale."

I liked how this pauldron was coming, so I went ahead and uploaded a preview. I've had blindfolded masks on pauldron designs since I was a kid.

Someone recently told me that there was a design like that in some MMO, WoW I think. This felt a bit crushing and I almost didn't design it this way, but on thought I realized it's not /that/ original a notion. Pauldrons make a good place for faces. Blindfolds are one of the common ways to decorate faces. So.. I decided to anyways. I like the result so far.

I have a feeling SL is going to kill this, since it is only one prim. (Went a bit overboard, I know better.) I also think that I am uncertain Steampunk will ever stop being utterly ridiculous to me. (No offense, Steampunk fans.)

Notation: I realized I hadn't actually posted any images of an object completely before I started the process that kills detail, and I like how this part is coming along- so I am posting it up! While the texture process in Zbrush doesn't remove /that/ much detail. It does kill a lot of the sharpness and clarity afforded by the realtime light and shadow rendering.

"They gird themselves in cloth and metal of strange make, of unknown materials imbued with curious properties. For these trinkets alone, the desperate or greedy have lost their lives.

Work in progress part five! An example of conversion. I model in all of the detail I can at the highest resolution I can, and when the texture is "baked", much of that detail is saved, and can be transfered to the low resolution model. The model on the left is the high poly zbrush model. With over a million vertices, or points, no game in it's right mind, much less SL, would include such a bracelet. However, those details can be dropped down to the much more agreeable thousand... ready to be dropped into second life as you see it onscreen.

(Though, regretfully, some detail is still lost, due to how Second Life compresses it's textures. But it's very close!)

Work in Progress Slide 4!: Next I start on the prims, sculpting the simple low poly prims (far left). After exporting that to SL to make sure it looks right, I up the polycount considerably and add in some high details. (Middle) Lastly, I add color, shading, texturing, shadows and highlights with a combination of texture baking, pixil painting, and hand drawn elements. I will usually pull the texture made from this into photoshop for further edits before shipping it to SL!

"They come from all walks of life, these sorcerous souls. Without fail, each is born into an inescapable destiny that guides them from then on."

Part three of the work in progress, here I've taken the textures made from the Zbrush model and imported them into SL after a few photoshop touch-ups. While not 100% complete, this is very near the final version of the under-suit for the SL model, as seen in the sketch a few pictures back.
