DSC_6551_Edit: At Mapleton Park in Moncton tonight. Shot with Nikkor 18-300mm @ 300mm, cropped in close. He was about 25-35' away from me when I got this -- the closest any of them got tonight on this outing.

One of my new nature obsessions this summer: capturing images and videos of Red-winged Blackbirds in marshy areas or meadows. Their songs are very beautiful to me and remind me of summers back in the Annapolis Valley on the farm growing up when they and other birds would sing in the meadow behind my parent's house.

Now that I have a 18-300mm lens with a mega-zoom, watch for pictures like this in the future.

I plan to return to this same spot -- one of the ponds in Mapleton Park -- to get better close-ups of them.

DSC_6358: Testing out time lapse night time photography with my new 18-300mm lens in our yard last week. There was a low flying propeller airplane circling around in a holding pattern waiting to land at the airport. I managed to capture a good portion of its wing lights as it flew over our house.

Note there is A LOT of cropping going on here because I really wanted to show the detail of the craters on the moon's surface. Something that I couldn't really do with my 55-300mm lens.

DSC_6046: I went back to Mapleton Park this afternoon for a 2nd field trial with my Nikkor 18-300mm lens.
Here is a sample shot of a squirrel on a stump eating sunflower seeds that people left there.
Absolutely no editing whatsoever here.
I was quite close to the stump and the squirrel was very tame so this is at 155mm to get it all in the frame.

Raptors in a tree

DSC_5913_Edit: Shot on the border between Gaspereau and Melanson, Nova Scotia outside of Wolfville on Easter Sunday 2013.
Some cropping here, a lot of sharpening, and some colour enhancement.
These eagles were very far away from me, and with my 55-300mm maxed out to 300mm, they were still a little blurry.
I had spotted these birds in the same tree next to the Gaspereau river the day before, and stopped here with my camera on my way back to Moncton to finally get this shot.
I plan to return to this area in the near future with my new 18-300mm 16.7x lens when I get it to get closer shots.

DSC_5798: On Good Friday I was out on a photo safari around Grand Pre in the afternoon with my sister who lives nearby. I was hoping to spot some eagles that day, and I did manage to see a few.
Here is one of the better shots I got, but the lens I was using was only 55-300mm and I was very far away from the eagle.

This bald eagle was flying around on the northern side of the Grand Pre Dyke and then dipped down and captured something to carry off. I'm not sure what the thing is in its talons.

I went looking for eagles on 3 separate occasions during my trip to the Wolfville area with mixed success.

This pic is probably on of the better ones, despite the fact that I had to crop a lot.

Land of Evangeline: Spring 2013

I shot this video on Good Friday 2013 on the Grand Pre Dyke near the Acadian Cross, and at the canteen area at Evangeline Beach in King's County, Nova Scotia.

It was just early Spring here, so the snow had just melted recently and there wasn't much green growing on the land.

The first part of this video shows the area in Hortonville near the Acadian Explusion memorial cross near the mouth of the Gaspereau River as it empties into the Minas Basin.

The second part of this video shows the Minas Basin at full Spring tide a few minutes later.

In both segments you can see Cape Blomidon in the background, which is a very unique landmark that everyone knows in the area.
