Green spot in the wet valley

Somewhere between Skei and Byrkjelo. The valley's name is Våtedalen, which in fact means "The Wet Valley"

The color is partly due to the light conditions. Almost midnight and heavy clouds does not make much light, even close to midsummer in Norway - although 800 km south of the polar circle.

Taken from the ferry between Molde and Vikebukt while crossing Romsdalsfjorden. From south - left - a weather front is approaching, bringing heavy clouds and rainfall. On the north side the weather is still agreeable. Sun is shining from a blue sky scattered with minor cauliflower clouds.

My favorite photo object showed itself from a new side today. The view lasted half a minute. Fortunately I had my camera ready, but had to run to a place where no trees obstructed the sight. Just made it.

Photo taken from on board the ferry crossing the fjord between Vestnes and Molde. The very uneven cloud cover caused illumination of parts of the mountains and the sea mark in the front.

The Princess Stone

Prinsessesteinen i Riksheimdalen, Sykkylven, Norge / Norway

This black stone with the magnificent red band, I rate as the most beautiful stone I have ever stumbled across. The stone is close to and can easily be seen from the trail from Trandal to Sykkylven, almost at the top of the Riksheimdalen valley. The valley, with five of its lakes, is seen in the background.

Note the stone in front to the left. I removed this stone and a few others smaller ones that partly covered the red band, hence the pattern is much more visible now.

Pinsessesteinen, "Princess Stone" - why that name? It is a name I have suggested. originally I thought of naming it "Dronningsteinen", or the "Queen stone". The reason is that the Norwegian Queen, Dronning Sonja, at least once made the trip over this pass, so I have referred to this trail as "The queen trail". However, the name "Dronningsteinen" is connected to Norse literature, the story of the two first people on the earth, Ask and Emla, hence the name was "taken". But the Queen was the Norwegian Crown Princess when passing the stone, hence "Prinsessesteinen" was found appropriate. Futhermore, the red band looks like long red hair that even a fairytale princess could be proud of.

August 20th (2009) this photo was published in the local newspaper "Sykkylvbladet", and they used the name "Prinsessesteinen". Hence I can hope for more interest in this stone, and even that the name settles. The place is not easy to reach, which makes it well protected, and it may encourage some to discover a place where they have not been before.

My shadow, my fog bow, my aura

While walking in the Sykkylven mountains with a beautiful autumn sun behind, a cloud raised up in front of me, and I saw the shadow of my head within a halo.

I have seen such haloes several times surrounding the shadow of an aeroplane, but I had never seen anything like this before. I was puzzeled and experimented with the situation. Here I have found a place where I could create a shadow of my whole body. I have spread my legs, and you can se a slight shadow of my lifted right arm.

There is partly sunlit grass in the foreground, in the background another hill and the fjord further behind.

I always regarded this as a rainbow phenomenon, but learned today that it is a different phenomenon based on Mie scattering and not refraction and reflection. I found this explanation on internet ( www.gsfc.nasa.gov/scienceques2002/20030214.htm ).

"How about fog bows? Yes, fog bows, also known as fog dogs, cloud bows or white rainbows, can be observed on occasion. But even when one has formed, it may go unnoticed, since fog dogs are generally bereft of color. Whereas rain drops may be 0.5 mm in diameter, fog droplets are typically less than 1/10 this diameter. If you happen to see such a bow, you may notice that it's broader than a rainbow (rainbows cover about 2 degrees of the sky or about 4 times the width of the Sun or Moon), and there may be an orange tint on the outer portion of the bow. Actually, fog bows are caused by a diffraction of light rather than refraction and reflection. Because the fog droplets are so tiny, the wavelengths of visible light, which are obvious in the larger drops producing the rainbow, interfere with each other. The result is color bands that overlap. As the droplets get smaller, the interference is even greater, and the light that emerges is completely colorless. As with rainbows, in order to see a fog bow, you need to look in the opposite direction of the Sun."

Icicles, icicles...

Alongside the steeply climbing road "Gråura" between Sunndalsøra and Oppdal several small waterfalls shed their water over the rocky roadside. And when the weather is cold, they turn in to a spectacular display of a thousand icicles, partly colored by organic material and/or iron.

Vellesetertindane (Skjortehornet) is one of the alpine mountains you can see from Velledalen. The range is called Sunnmørsalpane (Alps of the region Sunnmøre).

Sunnmørsalpane, Lyngsalpene in the north and Western Jotunheimen (Hurrungane) are the only alpine mountain ranges in Norway, the others are rates as glacial. Real alpine mountains are characterized by nunataks, peaks that reached above the ice, squeezed between glaciers.

Central parts of Sykkylven seen from Sandvikshornet, close to the top.

Sykkylvsfjorden vith the bridge over to Ikornnes. The central mountain in the background is Sønnavindsnipa. The valley in front of Sønnavindsnipa is Riksheimdalen, the largest mountain valley in Sykkylven. Mostly dark clouds that day, but the sun highlighted the fjord and the farms on the west side of the fjord.

Late, late evening close to the midsummer night, in Våtedalen, "Wet valley", between Byrkjelo and Skei in Sogn og Fjordane.

Clouds make the evening even darker, but a final ray of sunlight hits the hillsides in the background.

Nidarosdomen on a cold winter day.

Low sun and warm light in Trondheim, Norway.

The trees are white with frost, yesterday they were completely covered with white crystals after the longest and coldest cold spell in Trondheim for 13 years. In fact I stopped to make a photo of the cathedral together with the completely white trees I had seen the day before.

Today it was minus 3, after the cold weeks this was a rather warm day, and in the sun much of the white ice cover had gone. The disappointment disappeared when I saw the beautiful reflections.

Sykkylven is a municipality of 8000+ inhabitants south of Ålesund on the Norwegian west coast. The main income is furniture productions, Ekornes is the largest producer in Norway and well known all over the world.

But what you will notice when you come to Sykkylven is not the industry, but the beauty of the nature and the mountains in particular. These mountains are among the most alpine mountains in Norway, and reach heights of 1300 to 1600 m.

The photo shows Aure, the center of Sykkylven, seen from the marina.

The dominating mountain in the background is Trollkyrkja. Left of the center is Råna, the highest mountain on the photo. They are both a part of Sunnmørsalpane, and specifically the area called Rånahalvøya, "The Råna Peninsula", which is known for its many peaks and several small glaciers. Three of the minor glaciers can bee seen here: Ljosåbreen on Trollkyrkja and Blåbreen ("Blue glacier") on the mountainside just below Råna on the picture. In the background to the left is a part of the somewhat larger glacier in the Regndalen valley.

Mountain road in Norway

Sognefjellsveien, a main road from the inland of Norway towards the Sognefjorden on the west coast. This is the highest point, approx 1400 m, the highest point of any main road in Norway.

The sticks are there to show where the road is. You need them after heavy snowfall. The snow bars to the left behind are 4-5 m high, and this is mid June.

You get seasick if you drive too fast here...
