Another bird which was taking advantage of the food in ponds formed by receding flood waters.

I was just wondering about the origins of the name of this bird and did a Google search. I found the following on Wikipedia:

"Known as Elang Bondol in Indonesia, the Brahminy Kite is the official mascot of Jakarta. In India it is considered as the contemporary representation of Garuda, the sacred bird of Vishnu. In Malaysia, the island of Langkawi is named after the bird ('kawi' denoting an ochre-like stone used to decorate pottery, and a reference to the bird's primary plumage colour)."

Heavily cropped and edited. A record shot, only.
Just looking through my reference books, this species appears to be the only Australiain raptor with forked tail.

I believe the lack of buff colouring on the breast indicates this is a mature bird. Compare to the bird in previous posting.

A fairly nondescript little bird, generally quite secretive and shy. I think the relatively strong buff colouring in the breast may mean this is an immature bird.
This shot is heavily cropped and was taken on the first occasion I got a reasonable view of one of these.

I know that both this bird and the one in the previous posting are juveniles. What I don't know is what the difference in colouring indicates. I suspect the lighter coloured bird in this photo is younger. I would appreciate it if anyone can clarify this.

I only just noticed the comparatively large dewlap on this bird (compared to its mate in the previous posting). The larger dewlap would suggest this is the male.

Raleigh must be about about the extreme south east corner of the range for this species. There were a pair of them. I found them very difficult to gey close to - they would not take flight but just run further away. They are beautiful birds.

I suspect this bird is an immature.

These are one of my favourite honeyeaters. They are such a soft beautiful yellow.
