A fairly standard view for the Jitong Line, but what better way to spend an afternoon than sitting on a hillside (with a beer) watching the passing workhorses of freight haulage getting to grips with their task. The two QJ's are seen here westbound nearing Lindong in Nei Mongol, China. It was April, 2005, but by years end, steam would be gone.

The levelling arm has been pushed out from the body of the spreader (right), and with the trusty JS loco applying full power, clearing the trackside can commence. The loco and spreader remain as a dedicated unit, and spend their days bulldozing rubble away from the tracks up on the extensive spoil tips at Sandaoling open cast coal mine, Xinjiang Province in the far west of China.

Back in 1966, we spent a week 'oop north' on a Rail Rover ticket. For a southern youngster brought up on a diet of Portsmouth electrics, and the odd Bulleid Pacific, it was a revelation to see so much freight on the move. In those days, you could open the windows of the carriages too. So somewhere, possibly around Nottingham, I was able to take this picture as we overtook a grubby '9F' workhorse plodding along in the wet, misty conditions.

The SY was pushing back into Beicheng washery when a taxi driver racing the train narrowly squeezed over the level crossing. The flagman raised the red signal, and the train shuddered to a halt. The driver of the loco then spent the next fifteen minutes trying the gain traction to restart the loaded coal train on the icy rails. On this unlit section of track, the only illumination is coming from the cab lights, and the sparks from the spinning driving wheels. Jixi Mine Railway, Heilongjiang Province, China.
