This really was an ATM sometime back in the dark ages, one of those non-affiliated types you see attached to sleazy liquor stores. The innards (what's left of them) give it away.

Nerds for Nature: the McLaren Park BioBlitz! (11 May 13)

Lots of activity at McLaren Park these days equals lots of pics of folks doing interesting things.

Saturday almost 70 Nerds for Nature visited the park - many for the first time - and conducted a one-day survey of the park's flora and fauna, called a BioBlitz. Using the iNaturalist smartphone app, they photographed and geotagged bugs, native plants, weeds, birds, and who knows what else.

This group is checking the easternmost slope of the park, overlooking the Portola neighborhood. SF Bay is just above the picture.

Photographers at the second McLaren Park photowalk make their way up the park's eastern slope near Visitacion and Mansell. Alas, I could only photograph them from afar as my broken foot does not appreciate uneven trails on hills, but that allowed me to get a few shots like this one.

This Saturday May 4th our second photowalk will take place in McLaren Park, San Francisco.

Meet 10 am at the parking lot at Visitacion and Mansell. Here's a map. Parking lot is on the south west side.

A joint project between Save McLaren Park and San Francisco's Harvey Milk Photo Center, the walk is open to all. Our first walk two weeks ago was a stunning success. This time we'll be hiking on the South East side of the park, overlooking the Bay, San Bruno Mountain, and Candlestick.

More photowalks are coming throughout spring and summer.

You often see avocets at Heron's Head in SF. These two were engaging in odd (to me) behavior, which finally became clear when the upright guy mounted the one leaning over.

This being shot in Pacific Beach at Tourmaline, one of the best surf beaches around, I can only assume that the surfer used this board to get his other board and himself to the beach to catch some late afternoon waves.

Yes, Canada geese have bred so prolifically they're considered pests pretty much everywhere. And true, they are definitely not the friendliest of critters. Their "deposits" make lawns unsittable and sidewalks slippery hazards. They drive other birds away, chase toddlers and dogs, etc etc etc.

But who can resist this? Not me, nor the dozens of other humans stopped in their tracks watching these formidable parents taking the brood out for one of their first swims.

I think I'm going to start a new set of pics showing various urban finds that really belong to a different season. I know of several pumpkins still haunting the 'hood, a Christmas wreath and lights (not at the same location) and then there's this guy. Gotta say, the weather and especially our recent wind storms have rendered him even creepier than normal.

What it looked like years ago? Not exactly: the trees were planted in the '30s. Still, hard to believe this is present-day San Francisco. Wild places exist, you just have to look carefully to find them.
