Here we see the connector and lead for the temp sensor... the source for the temperature gauge reading. The connector fell off as I was moving the wire out of the way, so I suspect that the temp gauge may well have not been working; perhaps the reason the overheating went unnoticed until too late.

I have yet to find out if this coolant leakage was caused by a fault in the head or block. I'll probably check the mating surfaces with a straight edge once we get the old engine out, just to satisfy my curiosity.

I think we'll remove the engine only, leaving the transmission in place. Aside from the OD not staying engaged, the box itself works fine, as far as I know. We should be able to access the bell housing bolts pretty easily from here, maybe.

Unlike the Midget I'm accustomed to, the Spitfire has a handy removable transmission cover. Don't I wish the Midget was so equipped... It would make several tasks worlds easier.
