I've not been able to get out with my camera much over the last couple of weeks and so still have nothing new to post. It's been a very poor month photographically for me and so I've been looking forward to what I'll hopefully be seeing over the next few months. I'm hoping to visit RSPB Bempton Cliffs again because I love photographing the gannets. What wildlife are you all looking forward to seeing?

I'll be catching up with my contacts over the next few days.

Peeping Puffin - Explored

Lunga, Treshnish Isles, Scotland. I thought I could maybe get away with sneaking a few more puffin photos in while some of my other contacts are posting theirs! Not sure what I'll run out of first - shots to post or 'P' adjectives to put in the title.This puffin was nesting in a gap in the rocks which was at eye level by the path back to the boat we were on. We heard a noise as we walked past - and couldn't believe we were so close.

Pretty Puffin

Gannet Portrait - Explored!

RSPB Bempton Cliffs. Another of the big close up shots I was able to get on our visit last month. I think that gannets are beautiful - I love their eyes - and so I was in heaven for a few minutes when they came so close.

Best viewed on black I think.

Picking Some Spring Greens

RSPB Bempton Cliffs. As you will have already realised, I couldn't stop taking close-up shots of the gannets on my visit a few weeks ago. I don't think I've managed to get so close on previous trips - I was just lucky that these birds chose to gather some nesting material a little closer this time. Don't worry - I won't be posting them all but there may be just one or two more.

I'm off to Scotland for a week soon and am not sure how much internet access I will have. I'll catch up with everyone when I can.

Bempton Gannet

RSPB Bempton Cliffs. I got a couple of opportunities to get much closer to some of these beautiful birds than I have managed before. This bird was just about to grab a billful of grass to take back to its partner on the nest.

Some information on gannets from Wikipedia -

Adults are 81–110 cm (32–43 in) long, weigh 2.2–3.6 kg (4.9–7.9 lb) and have a 165–180 cm (65–71 in) wingspan. Before fledging, the immature birds (at about 10 weeks of age) can weigh more than 4 kg (8.8 lb). Their plumage is white with black wing tips. The bill is light bluish. The eye is light blue, and it is surrounded by bare, black skin. During breeding, the head and neck are brushed in a delicate yellow.

Togetherness

A pair of nesting gannets at RSPB Bempton Cliffs. I love watching these birds reinforce their bond with their bill paddling and mutual grooming. I had missed that with this pair but it was still very touching to see them sat quietly together (and even better in a good light!).

Welcome To My Home

After being very jealous of other people's images of nesting/feeding woodpeckers I've finally got my own! I was so excited to watch (and photograph) this female and her mate feeding their youngster over the past few days - the first time I had ever seen it. More shots below - the bottom two show the female cleaning up the nest.

Great Crested Grebe

As you will have already realised, I've become addicted to photographing these beautiful birds. I couldn't resist capturing this one as I wait for the eggs the grebe pair I have been watching to hatch. There are still several pairs of grebes either just starting to build a nest or still displaying and mating. This bird was sitting on a partly built nest which didn't have any eggs in it. I won't have very much time for Flickr over the next few days and so will catch up again with my contacts next week. Have a good weekend everyone!

Mere Sands Wood, Holmeswood, Lancashire. Just about the only decent shot from an afternoon out at MSW and RSPB Marshside. Hoping for some better weather and light soon! This had to be taken at ISO 1600 during the afternoon - in May!

Waiting Patiently

This is one of the pair of great crested grebes I've previously photographed building a nest - they did actually use the nest which is out in open water. The first shot below shows one of the matings from earlier this month which took place on this nest. This pair actually mated 4 times during the afternoon I was there. The second shot shows how the male walks over his partner afterwards to get back into the water! Hopefully they will be successful and I will see the young riding on their parents' back next month.

A New Home

This pair of great crested grebes building a new nest yesterday. There were at least 15 pairs of these birds and, after a slow start when many were asleep, I saw lots of different behaviour. Many couples were head shaking, but then two of them actually mated and I was treated to another view of the weed dance. Pity the light was poor and the sky so grey - this photo (and the one below) were the best of the bunch.

"She'll Love This!"

RSPB Bempton Cliffs. This male gannet appeared to be very proud of the small piece of stone he had selected as a rather unusual gift for his partner who would be sitting on their nest - he sat with it in his beak for several minutes before flying off to present it.

I loved watching the male gannets gathering nesting material to take back to their nests. They seemed to congregate in certain spots and plucked all the grasses and wildflowers from it. The photos below show the different 'gifts' some of the gannets selected.
