New Zealander Janna Hamilton visited Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan, a place where thousands of people fleeing the conflict in Syria now call home.

Janna is the Humanitarian Media Officer for Oxfam International, the coalition of 17 Oxfam affiliates from around the world.

Daily life in an Abandoned shopping centre

A family sit in a temporary shelter in in an abandoned shopping center in Dede Al Koura after they ran out of money to pay the rent for the room in which they were staying.

They were planning to seek refuge at a local bedouin camp and had gathered wood and a plastic sheet with which to build a basic tent. Later, they decided to erect the sheet to create a makeshift room for themselves inside a public area of the centre.

The centre is home to some 90 Syrian families and has been connected to a nearby municipal water tower but still only receives water sporadically. The residents live with few possessions in bare tiled rooms that used to be shops.

Oxfam is planning to help improve the water supply for the centre and register the families to allow them to receive cash transfers to meet the $100 per month rent that they are paying the centre's owner.

Disease is spreading through Syrian refugee camps because people have no washing or hygiene facilities. As summer approaches, it’ll get worse.

Thanks to you, Oxfam has built 48 wash blocks in Zaatari refugee camp. Each block includes showers, tap stands, basins for laundry, toilets, sinks and special toilets for disabled people.

Children from two families, who were neighbours in Syria before they escaped the war in Syria. They now live in a roughly constructed room in a rubble-strewn open car park area under an apartment block in the town of Qalamoun, near Tripoli in Lebanon.

With the arrival of winter, plummeting temperatures, and in some places deep snow, thousands of families living in self-made shelters in Lebanon are facing an extremely tough few months without heating, blankets or food.

Hanin Handan, 20, her husband Rasmi, 26, and their son, currently live just outside of Al Jaleel camp in the wider Palestinian neighbourhood. After their home was burned down during the fighting they fled Syria with nothing but the clothes they were wearing.
