Propaganda means a deliberate and systematic attempt to shape perceptions, manipulate knowledge and behavior to control for the purpose of producing a by propagandists desired reaction. The term "propaganda" is used especially in political contexts;. In economic talking rather of "advertising", in religious of "proselytizing".

Not every action is wooing political propaganda, for example, are also formed unintentionally viewpoints by experienced benefits or merits watching. Propaganda in the true sense is a specially contrast to influence, manipulation and domination fuse inserted advertising.

Propaganda bezeichnet einen absichtlichen und systematischen Versuch, Sichtweisen zu formen, Erkenntnisse zu manipulieren und Verhalten zum Zwecke der Erzeugung einer vom Propagandisten erwünschten Reaktion zu steuern.Der Begriff „Propaganda“ wird vor allem in politischen Zusammenhängen benutzt; in wirtschaftlichen spricht man eher von „Werbung“, in religiösen von „Missionierung“.

Nicht jedes politisch werbende Handeln ist Propaganda; z. B. werden Sichtweisen auch unbeabsichtigt durch erfahrene Wohltaten oder beobachtete Verdienste geformt. Propaganda im eigentlichen Sinne ist demgegenüber eine eigens zur Beeinflussung, Manipulation und Herrschaftssicherung eingesetzte Werbetechnik.

Entscheidend ist dabei die geschickte Auswahl und gegebenenfalls die Manipulation der Nachricht und nicht ihr Wahrheitscharakter. Durch die Monopolisierung der Propaganda in diktatorischen Regimen, insbesondere des Nationalsozialismus und Stalinismus, erhielt der Terminus einen stark pejorativen Charakter. Als Folge verwendet z. B. keine der demokratischen Parteien der Bundesrepublik Deutschland für ihre Werbemaßnahmen heute noch die Bezeichnung Propaganda.[2] Dennoch ist die gezielt einseitige Darstellung von Informationen eine gängige Praxis, auch in Demokratien. Auf Grund seiner negativen Konnotation ist der Begriff Propaganda weitgehend dem der Öffentlichkeitsarbeit (oder dem englischen Public Relations) gewichen.
