One billion children live in urban areas, a number that is growing rapidly. Yet disparities within cities reveal that many children lack access to schools, health care and sanitation, despite living alongside these services...

Their story represents so many street children in Brazil, most of whom will continue to survive as best they can on the streets at Christmas. Don't ever forget that they exist and please do your little bit to help them....

I could have survived, but there were far too few who could look me straight in the eyes............ and feel something for me.

We all tend to turn our backs on the street children in the big cities. In so many ways this must be the greatest unjust committed by humanity in the 21st Century.

First they murdered me and got away with it and now they killed the courageous judge who tried to put them in prison.......

My deepest respect and sincerest condolances go to the family of the Brazilian judge, Patrícia Acioli, renowned for her admirable work against organised crime, death squadrons and corrupt police officers in this country.

47-year-old Patrícia was executed with 21 gunshots outside her home last week, only days before she was due to serve sentence on several more corrupt policemen in a long line of more than 60 already sentenced by her for their involvement in organised crime and death squadrons. Patrícia was well-known for her heavy blows with the hammer of justice, often condemning criminals to the maximum penalty for their ruthless crimes against innocent citizens.

Brazil’s Supreme Court condemned the killing as an attack on democracy and the rule of law.
“Cowardly crimes against magistrates are an attack on the independence of the judiciary, the state and Brazilian democracy,” Supreme Court President Cezar Peluso said in a statement.

Unfortunately judges of Partícia's calibre are few and far between in a society ruled by impunity.

Brazil has stepped up its campaign against violent crime ahead of hosting football’s World Cup in 2014 and the Olympic Games in 2016, but if the country will be able to raise its flag in honour and boast "Order and Progress" is quite another question.............

There are several provisions in Brazilian law regarding the protection of children against all forms of abuse, violence, and sexual exploitation. But the basic problem here is the enormous gap separating children's rights as inscribed in law from their effective exercise or guarantee in practice.
The United Nations has estimated that around 500,000 Brazilian children are victims of sexual exploitation. The U.N. also states that in the northern and northeastern regions, "most sexual crimes against children and adolescents are not investigated, and in some cases representatives of the judiciary are involved in those cases."

Strangely enough and as if by fate, the street kids we have lost over the years, seemingly wanted us to be constantly reminded of their past existence by leaving behind some kind of legacy...

Wender (left) belonged to the first group of kids rescued from the streets by me between 1993 and 1995. He was 13 years old at the time.

Fábio (right) is now married and father to little Ana Clara shown in the preceding Christmas portraits. He now works at our living-in centre near the coast together with his wife and family. You can follow his story, told in his own words here

Little Ana Clara is my granddaughter and the daughter of my adopted son Fábio, once an abandoned street kid for six years in the centre of São Paulo. That was 18 years ago. Today he helps run our new living-in centre near the coast, where he now lives with his wife and daughter.

Please don't hesitate to support our efforts, because without your help this little Christmas angel would not have been possible........

During their summer holidays, our children look through the glass case protecting the traditional symbol of the Festival of the Divine Holy Spirit, which is held for more than 300 years in the town of Itanhaém, recalling the "abdication" of the Portuguese crown in favor of the Divine.

Please support our cause at Christmas to prevent more kids from hitting the streets and becoming victims.

But children are imprisoned all over the world and many will spend their Christmas behind bars, without any attention or access to their rights. The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child stipulates that no child should be deprived of freedom in any unlawful or arbitrary way, and that detention “shall be used only as a measure of last resort and for the shortest appropriate period of time;” the Convention also has a clause stating that any “child deprived of liberty shall be treated with humanity and respect for the inherent dignity of the human person, and in a manner which takes into account the needs of persons of his or her age.”

Far too many kids in Brazil are still being punished this way, also due to a failing child welfare system with no other options. The majority do not break the law out of choice but are simply victims of poverty and lack of opportunity.

Please support our cause at Christmas to prevent more kids from hitting the streets and becoming victims.
