The One Thousand Mile Texas Flag. Photographed on 4X5 at @phootcamp with @nuzz 's film and camera and lighting by Matthew Mahon. I knew I wanted to shoot some 4X5 at some point during phootcamp, but wasn't sure what would be the best subject. After our Phootenany, I chose this weathered flag that traveled bound to our RV as the perfect 4X5 subject. All the detail, the cheap frayed fabric, the plaster adobe wall, the chinese grommets, the dirty whites, the sewn edges. It was all this detail that motivated me to capture with 4X5 but I only needed one more thing to bring this together. Thats when I grabbed a pencil and wrote Phoot 2011 in the bottom left corner. Thanks to Nuzz for processing and scanning this gem.

My Phoot Camp buddy Portrait,

I'm always get a bit nervous about the forever optimist, but in Matthews case, once I met him I was sold. I was ready to buy whatever he was selling.

Here is Matthew Brush seated on some abandoned steel, at the Tumble Inn of Marfa, Texas. I was constantly impressed by Matthew's wandering eye. There was never a moment of rest in his Phoot Camp experience, always looking for the next picture, traveling, driving, and scouting. He has no hesitation in meeting people, befriending them and then making a beautiful shot of them. I was excited to have an opportunity to make his portrait, especially after meeting him myself.

Maybe less is more? more natural color?

A production take on Loud, in collaboration with Artist Michelle Jane Lee. I originally wanted to do a totally obnoxious set with all color squares and then I remember looking at Michelle’s work at an artshow in the Brewery. I then approached her to work directly with me in a set collaboration, she agreed. In Michelle’s work all of her colored squares represent letters of the alphabet.
This is Duc from the Vietnam National Opera & Ballet. I photographed him in Hanoi on the second day of our trip. Previous to leaving America I had the foresight of setting up a fixer to help gain access to interesting portraits. One of the many ideas my crew (http://noipictures.com/) had was the National Ballet practice space. So we planned on that for the first of four locations that day. We met early, had a Cafe Su Da and made our war to the drab and dirty arts building the national Ballet called home. I found some amazing french doors were the members would take their cigarette breaks and set up for that. Again pushing 15th of a second I began to make portraits. I first called over some of the girls and then finally settled on this man. I love his form and obvious vietnamese character. He was the best based on the contrast of his body and shorts against the architecture behind. I could have shot there all day, but we had a schedule to maintain. Off to the next location after just 4 rolls.

This is another typical day in this innocent girls life, yet for me was the most untypical day imaginable. It started out with renting Motorbikes and driving out to the Mi Son ancient ruins about an hour outside of where we were staying. On our drive we saw a wedding, funeral, terrible motor bike accident, and a local family tried to sell me one of their 10 year old daughters. Now I'm not saying that this has anything to do with this picture, but there is something so sensitive and innocent about this girl. It leads me to wonder if my motivation to stop and capture this image had anything to do with my day experience.

I'm a Capricorn, and that's what possessed me to shoot this. Now you might question what the hell this is and why. Here is the backstory. In our travels to Vietnam we didn't concern ourselves with planning. After all, you don't know what you really want to do without talking to the locals, or other travelers. So in our research we found out we had to visit Phu Quac. This is Vietnams answer to Hawaii, a small island off the southern coast. So we went and booked the second cheapest hotel on the coast. Little did we know that we would stay in one of the creepiest and scariest hotels I have ever been to. This hotel was littered with strange sculptures of animals dragons, shrimp, birds, and there was even a mermaid out in the ocean peering back at you with dead eyes. The sculptures must have been an asian way to beautify an otherwise halfway decent location and resort. Photographed here is one of the 30 or so characters we were confronted with at our stay. We almost couldn't even leave the room at night, but I did brave the mosquitos and creeps to bring you this shot.

When your doing the tourist thing in Vietnam your like sheep being hearded by bus to where they force you to go. Mostly these are place that will drain your wallet. At these malls they have all the tourist nicknacks you can ask for. Mostly junk that will break, overpriced and outdated postcards, cheap dresses, fake ivory or pearls... the tourist basics. I'm a photographer not a sheep.
I walked down the road(freeway) with motorbikes wizzing past and stopped at this small shack where I bought a water and relaxed for a while. The local shopkeeper's friend motioned to some Jicima she was eating, I polity obliged. She then cut me some slices with a thousand year-old knife, the only thing I understood was the buzzing sound of the 15 flys I was about to share the snack with. I sat and relaxed and took in exactly what was happening. I herd all the throaty vietnamese sounds as they looked me over, then they would giggle, I would smile and this repeated for the duration of the Jicama. Finally after what seemed to be hours a motorbike appeared. This teenaged man was on board, I then motioned to my camera, everyone laughed, I set my shutter at 1/15th and shot two frames.

I photographed this in Vietnam. Eunice and I had the very lucky opportunity of spending a night aboard a junk boat in Halong Bay. Halong bay is a majestic place where the South China Sea meets Vietnam. The rocks jut out of the calm squid infested waters like something out of a Dali painting.

The boat was quaint, comfortable, slow and pretty clean for Vietnam standards. Our tour package came with breakfast, lunch, and dinner, a private room, bay tour, and a cave tour.

This was our most touristy adventure of the trip but when you crop out the Sweeds, Germans, and Australians none's the wiser.

Susan Kang. This was a commissioned piece.

Most of the sets I tend to build have some sort of darkness to them. I typically use dark rich colors and spot light things. I like drama but for this commission drama wasn't the goal.

I wanted a more high key style, something beautiful and back lit. I wanted to capture a dream, a glow, an aura. So I went with all whites, and one main window.

cheers and enjoy.

casting outtake

Patrick Gorman of the film Gettysberg

I recently had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Gorman on a casting for a shoot I have coming up in January. Patrick's acting hails back to the seventies. He's acted in films like Gods and Generals, Gettysberg, Above The Law, and The Land That Time Forgot. (Dont ask me what these films are about, however I may have seen Gettsberg when I had a sub in 8th grade history) He has also starred some contemporary TV shows like Parks and Rec, The Drew Carey Show, and my personal favorite Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

One Funny thing about Patrick is that he is an ultimate character, I could not believe the fashion he walked in with, bright yellow 1980's sun glasses, big brown boots, levi's 501's and a sweet beige safari jacket. I was ready to shoot him then, but for the casting we needed all the guys in formal wear. We then started shooting some simple shots. Before I knew it we were shooting some of the most defined and intense portraits I have shot in a while.

As a portrait photographer always looking for interesting people, this is the type of guy you want to keep in the rolodex. I could not believe his look, he was amazing on camera, I could not take a bad picture of him. I was amazed at his subtle expressions, weathered look, and determination in his eyes. Once more, he has a bunch of horses I can't wait to point a camera at.

ps.. this was shot on my 20D circa 2005. go's to show its not always about the camera you have.
