Summary: Two young visitors looking at a model of the Mercury Capsule on display in the National Air Museum, now the National Air and Space Museum. The model was given to the Museum on March 29, 1961 because of the great public interest in the Mercury Space Program. The 1/3 scale model of the Mercury Capsule is completely equipped with escape tower, retro-rockets, interior fittings, and a model of an astronaut. The display was built and given to the Museum by the McDonnell Aircraft Corporation of St. Louis, the prime contractors for the capsules for the Mercury Project

Summary: Crowds flock to the Arts & Industries Building (A&I) in the early 1950s after the Exhibits Modernization Program gave the history displays a new look The "Syrian Sarcophagus" was brought into the country by a U.S. commodore who intended to give it to Andrew Jackson to be buried in. Jackson graciously refused the offer and the sarcophagus was eventually turned over to the Smithsonian and in May 1883 placed in front of the United States National Museum. Note the two-way traffic on the street in front of the building

Summary: Aerial image of the National Museum of Natural History's Rotunda shows the 10-ton Fénykövi Elephant in the center while visitors stroll around the museum floor. Engineer Peter C. Metzelar of the Office of Plant Services took the photograph at the very top of the museum with his Canon 50 mm lens on July 31, 1981. A few weeks of refurbishing the elephant's skin had just been completed. The photo won an award
