colinlogan posted a video:

At the tail end of a train trip from Curls into the city I found that the weather was still miserable. Over cast skies make for reasonable lighting, as they give you nice soft shadows, but I could've done without the rain. I was standing waiting to cross Flinders Street with my hood up when I spotted another hooded youth. She glanced backwards and I got a view of her face. The lip piercing looked cool so I started fumbling in my bag for my camera. This warranted another glance backwards. But before I could get my camera out the lights had changed and she was crossing the street. I followed but with experience telling me I probably wouldn't catch up.

Except that she turned left at the other side, allowing me to cut diagnally across the road and catch her. I kept pace beside her while asking her for her photo. She seemed ammused by the idea and asked for a little more information. Once I told her I was trying to take 100 portraits in 100 days she was in. I intentionally avoided saying I was going to take her picture, worried that taking a video portait of someone would kick their nerves up an order of magnitude. You can hear the little conversation we had while I photographed her in the video clip. This is pretty standard fare for my strangers. I'll normally take a couple of close up shots then step backwards and adjust focus to get some wider photos.

Once I'd taken the clip we came to a lull in the conversation but her body language seemed to suggest she was thinking "Ooh... is that all?". I asked her if she felt like grabbing a coffe. She was keen. So we started down to the ever so trendy Degraves Street to grab a drink. I'm no coffee drinker so when we got there I ordered the cider, and she had a long black. We sat there talking for almost an hour and with no hope of providing the detail that I normally do of a 60 second encounter I'll share a few little stories.

I'm a bit vague on European geography and so had to ask her exactly where Norway was. When she said near Sweeden I was caught up, she told me that she spoke a little Sweedish. So when my cider came out she noticed that it was Recorderlig, a super delicous Sweedish brand of cider. She explained to me that Recorderlig means record. Like a top score, or a high achievement. I was pretty impressed as I've developed quite a fondness for that label of late.

I asked her what she'd been up to in Melbourne and she told me that she'd visited the Disney Exhibition. Asked me what my favorite Disney movie was and I said it was probably the Emperor's new Grove. Hers was Bambi, because she liked that Bambi was able to overcome the death of it's parent and go on to conquer the bad guy and succeed. From western animations we made a step to eastern and starded talking about anime. When asked what my favorite anime was I must've answered right, saying Studio Ghibli, as she said "I think you're my favorite person right now"

We then talked extensively about computer games, of which she's an avid player. She told me that when she got into her dorm and noticed one of the boys there playing a Play Station Portable that she felt relieved because she knew she'd be ale to chat with him. But when she asked if he was a fan he said "Aah not really, I'm just playing this because I'm bored". Undetered she offered him her modded Nintendo DS, complete with 30 or so games, hoping that he'd enjoy that. His responce was underwhelming, brushing aside the offer.

Once we'd finished our drinks and the conversation was coming to an end I handed her a card and said I'd love to catch up if she's bored in Melbourne. She seemd a bit dissapointed and asked if instead she could give me her number. So I hadned her my phone and went inside to pay the bill. When I came out I had a new entry "Rose Norwegian".

This is the one hundredth portrait of my successful attempt at photographing 100 strangers in 100 days.

PS. To anyone confused by the video in an otherwise purely photographic stream: On my 25th, 50th, 75th and 100th pictures I've followed a "breaking the" theme where I alter something fairly fundamental to the project. What could be more at the core than the medium its self.

colinlogan posted a photo:

I wasn't sure exactly where I planned to shoot my final strangers. After work I vaguley planned to head into the city and perhaps try and find someone in the Bourke Street Mall where I've found so man of my strangers. But with nothing solid planned out and got out my camera and walked my bike to the train station. The weather was terrible, overcast and drizzling rain. When I got to the train station I noticed a few people that'd make for good strangers, and even asked one, but I was knocked back. So I locked up my bike and wandered around for a bit scouting out good background. I found a couple... but no strangers found me.

So I headed back to the train station, intending to go in, when I noticed this guy. He agreed to the photos pretty quickly, but got a call straight away. That was fine by me as it gave me a rare oportunity to get off some test shots right were I intended to take the photo. After a short while on the phone we started shooting. I asked him what he was up to today and he told me not much, he was just planning on meeting up with a mate. After a few shots we got seperated by a crowd of people trying to cross the road. It was a bit awkward when I made my way back to him, as I was clearly finished shooting. But I got out a card, told him he'd be able to see the shot later today and thanked him for taking part. We said goodbye awkwardly as well.

This is the last day, and last hour of my 100 strangers. By 00:00 Australian Eastern Standard Time I will have posted my 100th stranger, so take the phone off the hook and lock the kids in their room so you can take part in the count down. I'll be making a book of my strangers and their stories, let me know if you want a copy. Details can be found in the descriptions of previous strangers.

This is the ninety ninth portrait of my attempt at the 100 strangers project.

Nothing silly

Sometimes these encounters just don't go how you expect. I was at Hungry Jacks (Burger King) grabbing a quick lunch with a friend. As we were finishing up I noticed this stranger in the line. I could only see her from behind, so wasn't sure if she was stranger material. I asked my mate if he'd seen her walk in, but he hadn't. So I sat there for a bit studying the back of her head, then finally she turned to the side and I knew she'd do well. So I finished my food and grabbed out my camera, waiting to ask her when she sat down to eat.

She ordered. Waited for her food. Had it handed to her in a bag, and then prompty left the restraunt. I said Brendan "err... that wasn't meant to happen". So we left, heading back to work. The traffic lights where just outside the door and I looked around a little while we waited to walk. And there she was. Walking somewhat back and forth just down from us. So I said I'd be back at work soon and headed down to take her picture.

She was a bit suspicious at first, but once I explained the project she agreed. I was told that she didn't have much time because she needed to eat her lunch. Which perplexed me a little, I can't figure out why she didn't eat back at the restraunt. There was a better background in there too. I made the best of what I had, though I'm not happy with the background in this final shot. Once I was done I gave her a card and she said she'd check the site and make sure I wasn't writting any silly comments about her.
Fund raising for profit

I love the contrasting black and white in this photo. In a few of my strangers I've got split backgrounds and I really enjoy how it's turned out. I've read that one of the important aspects of making a deeply interesting photo is having things going on left to right, top to bottom, and front to back. The contrast also kinda matches up with the conversation I had with this stranger. I don't really understand what she does, but she did try to explain it to me.

She's in Melbourne for her work, arrived a couple of days ago. Her line of work is fundraising. But when I asked who she does it for she clarified that she works for a for profit organisation. So I suppose she's a fundraising consultant. Or perhaps she puts on events and such. Either way she was quite pleasant and followed my directions well. I shot her from a few angles and tried to make the best use of the ample soft light streaming out of the storefront to the right of the photo.

This is the ninety seventh portrait of my attempt at the 100 strangers project.

Mischievous

colinlogan posted a photo:

In start contrast to her Well behaved friend this little girl was full of energy. Her and the third girl were wresting about on the bench/seat at the cafe. Her friend was tackling her over and over and she would giggle and struggle while they pushed each other around. It was fun to watch but a bit challenging to shoot. So I kneeled patiently and waited for a break in the mischief.

When she noticed I was there I asked her if she would mind if I took her picture. She hid. But it wasn't long before she emerged and sat there looking at me for a few seconds. I had time to fire off a few snaps before she was once again under attack. I'd have liked to photograph her antagonist but she was far too full of energy to sit still for a photo. So I thanked the whole group (not that the kids were listening) and went back to sit with my mates.

I'm approaching the end of my 100 strangers. I began on November 30th and I will post my 100th stranger on March 9th. A few people have expressed interest in getting a copy of my project as a book so I'll be putting one together. It will contain both photos and the descriptions I've written alongside them, so it should be about 200 pages. If anyone out there would like a copy I'm happy to organise one for them. I'll charge whatever it costs me to get it done, which looks like it'll be about $80AUD including shipping. Let me know if you're interested by leaving a comment or sending me some flickr mail.

This is the first stranger portrait I've shot of a child. I'm actually pretty amazed at how engaging her face is. It's like she's not got any hang ups, not at all self concious. Just pure curiosity directed straight down the lens. Anyway my lack of children so far hasn't been a concious decision, they just don't tend to walk the streets of Melbourne. I've had my camera with me on my lunch break for the last couple of days, trying to make the best of my time and get my strangers shot on time for the grand finale. So having lunch with my workmates at a local cafe this girl, a couple of her friends and their mums came in and sat near us.

I was actually a bit nervous about asking for permission to shoot the kids. I thought that perhaps the mums would think something untoward was going on. I was put at ease a little when I overheard the mums speaking and they seemed to have a bit of an accent. Eventually I grabbed my camera out of my bag and walked over. With a little explaining I got the mother's permission, they also wished me luck as two of the kids were playing. I started with this girl, who looked like an easier target, quietly sitting to the side of one of the ladies. I asked if I could take her photo and she pulled a shy face, but then looked straight at me and stayed still. I had enough time for a couple of shots, tweaking my settings between them.

When I first asked this guy he was pretty hesitant. I told him it'd only take a minute and he agreed. I think I've gotten a bit better at selling the idea to people without pressuring them into it. Just speaking to people for a bit longer helps. It lets them know that you're a real person and nothing strange is going on.

Once I had his permission I asked him to move a little so I could get a better background. Unlike with my last stranger I remembered to strike up conversation this time. I went for my normal compsition, aiming for about 1/5th space above his face and about 1/5th torso. He said he'd just off uni where he's studying industrial design. He's in his first year which starts out as product design. Next year the course will move into automotive design.

When I had the shots I wanted I handed him the card with Weight of the world on it. He said something along the lines of "Nice stuff man".

I've been keeping my eye out for some males for one last attempt at balancing out my strangers a little. On my lunch break I walked down Chapel St for a while, passing up a few likely females, until I found this guy. He was walking along with this skateboard and said sure when I asked him for his picture.

The first thing I noticed was how much taller than me he was. I had to stand up on tippy toes to get an eye level shot. My first shot had a pretty glarey background, with reflections of the street coming from a store front window. Thankfully he was cool with me repositioning and shooting from the opposite angle which have us a 'Bulk Up' superman in the background. Mid way through my 5 or so shoots a guy walking past with a Canon 1D and L series lens bombed the shoot and took a couple of shots of his own.

I greeted them as I crossed the road to intercept them with "Hello ladies".
Gothic lolita

I've wanted to catch a girl in gothic lolita garb for ages. This girl's dress was exquisite and when I asked her for a photo she went to the trouble of putting on the bow that matched. I wanted to know whether gothic lolita was the style she was aiming for and when she confirmed I asked if she'd been to Japan. She said that she hadn't but that she was part Japanese. This put her on par with one of her friends, standing to the side, who had been to Japan but was no Japanese.

I asked her friend if she'd been into Shinjuku, which I'd mixed up for Shibuya. Shibuya is one of the fashion centers of Japan and Cosplayers and Gothic Lolita girls regularly gather outside the park there. She told me that she hadn't been to Shinjuku but she'd seen some wonderful people at Harajuku, which is the proper name for the area I'd been thinking of. Of course I mistook Harajuku for Akihabara, which is the geek and high tech suburb. There girls dressed in maid outfits, and some cosplay is quite common. It's been too long since I've been to Japan.

I think this chick might be the most alternative person I've ever met. You can just see a tatoo peeking out on the left of her neck. The shaved head and sequin jacket were what caught my attention initially but I was pretty happy with the details like her snake bite piercings. She was off to her own birthday lunch with some friends, including another shaven lady she told me.

She had turned 22 and was curious as to what my camera was. I told her and she explained that she did some street photography as well. When I expressed my curiosity she pulled out her phone and showed me some of her stuff. It was really cool with moody lighting and lots of stylisation.

colinlogan posted a photo:

I spent about half an hour with this strangers and photographed her in several locations. Originally I saw her as we were both crossing the road. She stood out and I saw her check out my camera which was hanging at my side. But the middle of the street an ideal spot to ask, as she was walking away from the train station I assumed she was going home and went in search of other game. When none was to be found I headed back the way I'd came and found her sitting alone at a tram stop. She was visibly excited to be asked for her photo.

I asked her if she could stand up so I could get a better background. She got up and then took the initiative and began looking for a a good spot to stand. I directed her to a spot just beside the tram stop that worked nicely and fired off a frame. She seemed to think this was the end and we began talking. I found out that she was planning on heading to meet her rabbi. I checked the shot I'd taken and it wasn't solid so I asked her if I'd be able to take a few more. She asked if I had to be anywhere and when I said that I didn't she suggested we walk down the street.

We talked about many subjects as we walked. I found out that the flowers she was holding were from her garden, where she also grows some fruit trees. She told me that she she's working in fashion now, or at least working on the fabrics I think. Originally she'd studied economics, after graduating from a montessori school. I asked her if she thought Keynes had got it right and we discussed modern macro economics and the banking collapse - and subsequent bail out - in the US. By about this time we were approaching a church and wandered into the grounds. We took a few photos in the garden but the trees made for uninspiring backgrounds.

As we continued out of the church and into the park next door she told me about the Ashkenazic Jews from western Europe and the Sephardi Jews from spain. She also spoke of her late husband and how they used to go for walks, which she enjoyed but doesn't do as often any more. We talked about family for a while and I learned that she was an only child and had no children. Her view of families had always been of happy kids playing together and she said she'd been suprised when she learned that many families argue often. I was also told that children hard hard to cook for when one is entertaining, they're much too fussy eaters.

After some photos in the park we walked down the final stretch to the synagogue. Conversation made it's way to dancing and music. I told her I do some swing dancing and she was impressed. She's interested in Israeli dancing but hasn't worked up the courage to go yet. We compared classical music that we're fans of, and agreed that Bach was shit hot.

My final close up shot was taken right in front of the synagogue. I gave her a card and told her she'd be able to see the pictures online. That was almost a week ago, unfortunately I've been pretty busy and writing up this summary took ages.

+2 Alternative shots in comments.

I finally managed to get a stranger in Lovers Walk along the train station. It's the route I take from work to the train station and there's normally nice lighting and a cook background. But not many people walk through it, and of the few I've asked none have agreed. Until now! This guy was walking behind me, which is always an awkward approach. I stopped and took a couple of test shots, then when he was almost at me I turned around ask asked him.

"Are you a director?" He replied. I was totally thrown, no idea why he'd ask.
"No, just a photography enthusiast"
"Do you watch a lot of short films?"
"Not... especially..."
"Aah I star in a lot of short films. I thought you might've seen me in one."

We went on and had a fairly long conversation before I asked again if I could take his photo. He told me that he's originally from Figi and came over to Australia for the lifestyle and for better work opportunities. One day he was on Chapel street and witnessed a minor car accident. He went for a drink with the guy who's car had been damaged and it turned out he was a director, who offered him some acting work. Back in figi he'd done some advertisement work for Coke and others.

This is the eighty fourth portrait of my attempt at the 100 strangers project.

This is the final shot of the 500m strangerthon. At first I thought I'd found another person in Cosplay. So I waited for her to cross the street to my side and I asked her for her photo. Of course she didn't hear me because she had headphones tucked away under those ears. Once I had her attention she lifted the headphone off a bit and I asked again. She was ok with it and I asked her to step over into the shadow, and away from the pedestrian traffic. I asked what the occasion for the headwear was and she told me that she'd just bought it from sportsgirl.

This is the friend of the first Street Photography.

It was a minute or so into our conversation with the girls before I let Gav keep the conversation flowing and I started shooting. Of course by this point I'd forgotten about my original intention to shoot them with their cameras. I reverted to my default head and shoulders composition. After taking a few shots of each of them this girl exclaimed "How close are you shooting!". I was a bit confused, as I was standing no where near as close as my last two shots, but went to show her the shots. In retrospect I guess she must've expected me to be further back to get her and the camera in.

Turns out the cameras they had where property of the school. As they were shooting film I asked if they scanned. After a bit of confusion this girl said that they do sometimes and do a little work with photoshop. I was pretty impressed and asked what year they're in, they said year 11 which would make them about 16. Finally I thanked them for the photos and wished them luck with their own.

I was seriously surprised by this photo when I got it home. I'd shot these girls at f/1.4, figuring that a little softness would prove flattering. However this snap is super sharp. So I'm very happy with my copy of the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX. I haven't seen any shots from the Canon or Nikon 50mm f/1.4s that are this sharp wide open. I think I'll have a peek around at some of the Canon 50mm f/1.2L shots to see how they compare.

In 500 metres walking up Elizabeth Street with Gav Owen I shot 5 strangers.About half way to Bourke street we came across another couple out on a photo walk. This stranger and her friend (who'll be 82) were out taking photos for a school project on street photography. The old film rangefinders around their necks drew me to them and I asked if I could take a shot of them with their cameras.

They were a little wary at first but we got talking about the project and photography in general and they started relaxing. We asked if they were taking candid shots and when they said that they were I pulled out one of my moo cards to show them an example of one of mine. I was hoping I had my shot of the old man but instead I found the shot of Bek Huffer Twirling around. They were pretty blown away and were then quite happy to have their pictures taken.

I took a couple of shots of the other girl and then a couple of this one. After chimping the shots I thought I'd nailed this one but I'd missed the focus on her friend. Unfortunately it wasn't till I got back home that I noticed that this shot isn't as sharp as I'd like it, but I guess that's the danger of shooting wide open.
