You'd think a street named after Puget Sound would be grander than this, but you'd be wrong. For one thing, it wasn't named directly after Puget Sound; and for another, well... maybe if early-20th-century planners had had their way, it would be! As it is, this developed section of the right-of-way goes up the hill a bit, leading to a small residential neighborhood in what would otherwise be part of the West Duwamish Greenbelt. It must be the least walkable residential neighborhood in the whole city. There is no way out except by coming down the way you came... and at that point you're on West Marginal Way, which is one of Seattle's almost entirely industrial thoroughfares. Decent views of the Duwamish and Beacon Hill from the top, though.

Usually Front Streets are rather important, no, being the first one in from a body of water? Not in this case. Front Street did use to be riverside, before the Duwamish was straightened out. This segment, now on the west bank, isn't much more than a stub. In fact, some maps just call it "South Access Road" to the Port of Seattle.

Another name that often is applied to a grand street — here in Seattle, Riverside Drive is only a few blocks long. It parallels the west bank of the Duwamish in the industrial section of the South Park neighborhood.

We have an Eastern Avenue, North Street, Western Avenue, and Southern Street. Of the four, only Southern and Western have stretches where they carry the "appropriate" directional designator (S. Southern Street and Western Avenue W.). Eastern Avenue is "N." all the way through, and North Street is "E." for the few blocks it runs.

There used to be a South Street in Montlake, a long, long time ago (paralelling North Street).
