Shepton Beauchamp - Lady Chapel - East Window - Virgin Mary Detail

David Cronin posted a photo:

To the north east of the town of Ilminster, in Somerset, lies the village of Shepton Beauchamp. At the heart of the village stands the parish church of Saint Michael and All Angels. The church which dates from the 13th to 16th centuries was restored in 1865 by the architect G. E. Street. The work carried out under Street included the addition of the clerestory to the nave and the south porch in the neo-Decorated style. The 20th century also brought additions to the church with the insertion of a fine stained glass window in the Lady Chapel and the erection of a Calvary group on a rood beam across the chancel arch.

This picture shows a close up of the figures depicting the Virgin Mary and the infant Jesus from the fine East window to the Lady Chapel of the church. From the dedication I would suggest the window dates to around 1938 and is probably the work of Christopher Webb, although there is no signature.

At the East end of the church are three stained glass windows which were probably installed at the time of Street's restoration, in 1865, or shortly thereafter. This picture shows one of the two smaller panels from the window which can be found in the North wall of the Sanctuary. The panel depicts the Virgin Mary as a child with her mother Saint Anna. I have not been able to discover the maker but suspect it was made by Hardman.

Curry Mallet - West Screen Pediment - Mary Magdalene

The village of Curry Mallet lies a few miles South East of Taunton in Somerset. The parish church can be found on the southern edge of the village almost at the end of a no through road.

The greatest treasure that the church possesses is the top section of the screen which separates the nave from the space under the West tower. According to Arthur Mee's King's England the screen was made for the house of Thomas Pyne, a member of an important local family. In the King's England it suggests that the screen was gifted to the church by the Mallet family after whom the village is named. Pevsner suggests that the screen dates to the middle of the 17th century. However if one looks at the costumes worn by Moses, Aaron and Hur in the centre top pierced work panel an earlier date could be postulated, maybe as early as the last years of the reign of Queen Elizabeth the First.

This picture shows one of the four larger figures from the lower part of the screen. In this case the figure represents Mary Magdalene. She is holding a jar of ointment or salve in her hand and her skirts are htched up ready for her to to anoint the feet of Christ; see John xii : 1 to 8

Curry Mallet - West Screen Pediment - Virgin Mary

In this case the figure represents the Virgin Mary who is holding the infant Jesus.

The village of Broadway lies about three miles West of Ilminster in Somerset. The parish church can be found a short distance outside the village about a quarter of a mile from the busy A358 which links the M5 at Taunton to the A303 at Ilminster.

The church has an unusual dedication, being dedicated to Saint Aldhelm and Saint Eadburga.

The church has five stained glass windows of which four can be easily photographed. The fifth, the West window, is partially blocked by items in the bell ringing chamber. Even though I was allowed access to the chamber the items in the way could not be moved so I decided not to attempt to record this window.

This picture shows a detail from the East window of the church which was made in 1923 by J Wippell and Co.. This light represents the Crucifixion of Christ with Mary Magdalene kneeling at the foot of the Cross.

The area north of Ilminster in Somerset appears on the map as a church crawlers paradise with many churches, some only a mile or so apart.

The village of Barrington lies approximately three miles North East of Ilminster in Somerset. The village is best know for the National Trust property, Barrington Court, which stands on the eastern edge of the village. The parish church dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary lies at the heart of the village and is also worth visiting.

This picture shows a detail from one of the three stained glass windows in the church made by C E Kempe. It is taken from the window which depicts the Annunciation; see Luke i : 26 to 38. The figure shown depicts the Archangel Gabriel. According to the Corpus of Kempe Stained Glass in UK and Ireland the window dates to 1897. In the Corpus this window is listed as SOM 4.2.
