Bishops Lydeard - View from the South West

David Cronin posted a photo:

Bishops Lydeard is a large village about six miles north west of Taunton in Somerset. At the heart of the village one can find the parish church of Saint Mary the Virgin.

There has been a church on the site since Saxon times. However the oldest part of the current church dates to the end of the thirteenth century. The church was heavily restored in Victorian times and was further embelished by Sir John Ninian Comper during the twentieth century. The church is a grade I listed building.

This picture, taken from the South West corner of the churchyard, shows the tower of the church which is perhaps its most noteworthy feature. It was built about 1450 and is one of the famous perpendicular towers of Somerset. The tower is built of red sandstone embelished with creamy Ham Hill stone.

There has been a church on the site since Saxon times. However the oldest part of the current church dates to the end of the thirteenth century. The church was heavily restored in Victorian times and was further embelished by Sir John Ninian Comper during the twentieth century.

The church has a number of stained glass windows which date from the 19th and 20th centuries.

This picture shows the right hand panel of the West window of the North aisle of the church which depicts a scene from the parable of the talents; see Matthew xxv : 14 to 30. The scene in particular shows the dismissal of the foolish servant in verse 30 . The window dates from circa 1860.

Bishops Lydeard is a large village about six miles north west of Taunton in Somerset. At the heart of the village one can find the parish church of Saint Mary the Virgin.

The church has a number of stained glass windows which date from the 19th and 20th centuries.

This picture shows one of the nine panels from the window at the west end of the North wall of the North aisle which shows the events leading up to the raising of Lazarus; see John xi 1 to 45. The window dates to circa 1860. This panel appears to show the start of the story in verse 1 where Martha and Mary are living in the house at Bethany, as it says in the King James translation '...Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha'.

I am suspicious that this glass may have originally been intended for another window in this church or elsewhere. My suspicions have been aroused because the panels do not follow a logical sequence through the story, some of the panels look as though they may have been cut down to fit the current location, and in the centre lancet part of the dedication has been put on a second row.

This panel appears to show the point in verse 20 where Martha goes and finds Jesus , as it says in the King James translation '...Then Martha, as soon as she heard Jesus was coming went and met him'.

This panel appears to show the point in verse 20 where Mary has been left alone at home, as it says in the King James translation '...but Mary sat still in the house'.
