For the Summer of Color 2013 group assignment, hot pink and bright orange. Art journal entry with rubber stamping, watercolor, and an internet image of folks dancing (view large!). I took liberty with capitalization rules for the quote because the font I liked didn't have any capital letters! Translation - "...remembering that Paris summer."

The creek has overflowed its banks. I ventured out for a look at it late this afternoon. It hasn't crested yet, so tomorrow it will be a little higher. That roaring is the rushing water.

Walking in Manteo, NC. Always wonderful. This lovely little lighthhouse is a replica of the old Roanoke Marshes Light. The original lighthouse was decomissioned in the mid-fifties and was lost in the sound when efforts to move and save it failed.

This pretty place stands in Shallowbag Bay. (Love the name!)

I collect old books, and often they're good for altering. Simple technique: I folded the pages inward to get this accordion look, embellished it with ribbon, twigs, even an old, well-used paint brush, and then tucked in little envelopes containing small, similarly themed art cards. You can see the envelopes and cards in separate photos; they are posted right before this one.

The Baby Kingbirds

These babies hatched three days ago. Only three are visible in the photograph, but there are actually six of them. Isn't that nest a work of art? The kingbirds actually hatch two clutches of eggs every year. This current nest started out a little smaller; the adults built it last summer. This year they added onto it. The nest is set comfortably in an upper corner of our front porch where Lucky the farm dog can keep an eye on the happenings above him.

Right now my precious hen Carolyn Appleby is sitting on 8 eggs. Soon there will be another blessed event here on the farm!

My favorite singer of all time. Rick would have been 73 today. There were lots of sad stories in his life. That's okay. I still celebrate his birthday every year. I am still in love. (Sigh...)

This was once a kitchen. Because this abandoned house has no floorboards, I took this photo through a broken window. See the next two photos in my photostream for exterior views of the house.

I am assuming that the floorboards, mantels, and other pieces of this stripped house were used in another house.

The house has been stripped. Wiring has been pulled from under the porch, doors and windows are missing, and all floorboards and the bottom half of the staircase are gone. There are no kitchen cupboards, and it appears that all the plumbing is gone. (Copper, no doubt. I know the stuff's valuable.) Probably one of the most disconcerting things about this property is the sound of cars on I-85. Oh, I realize the importance of progress, but I also realize the importance of preservation.
