Egypt: Freedom or fortune?

August 2012. Dar El Salam. Mokhtar Mohmed Abdallah, 38, felt like he was suffocating in the weeks and months following the uprising. Out of work for nearly a year, he struggled to provide for his wife and their four children.

With cash-for-work came the opportunity to earn money, improve his community and make some lasting friendships. Mokhtar says, ‘If I get one pound a day and have freedom it’s better than having ten pounds a day and being downtrodden and oppressed.’

August 2012. Hares. Amel Kamel 50 (pictured with her son Heny Halem, 27) and her family have lived in Hares all their life. Before the cash-for-work programme the channel that ran outside their home was unsafe and dangerous. Thanks to cash-for-work and the efforts of those involved, underground piping has since replaced the open and hazardous irrigation channel that had been the source of pollution and horridness for many years.

Amel and her family can now safely access their home and spread crops out to dry right at harvest time.

August 2012. Hares. Reid Nahim, 23, used to earn his living selling clothes in the cafés and meeting places in nearby villages and towns. Following the uprising, all this changed. Unable to walk the streets safely and with the cafes closed for fear of being targeted, Reid’s livelihood was shattered.
