This is our smallest resident butterfly here in the UK, with a wing span that can be a little as 16mm. Both sexes are similar in appearance, although the male upperside is almost black with a dusting of blue scales, whereas the female is more dark brown in colour. Both sexes have an underside that is silvery-grey in colour, and not unlike that of the Holly Blue.

Both sexes have an underside that is silvery-grey in colour, and not unlike that of the Holly Blue, although the Small is easily distinguished by the size difference.

Identifiers are......... the body hair is darker on the male, his patterning is more contrasting.

2 moths from last night,

very wet evening lots of rain, these were 2 I found attracted to our outside light. Mothing made easy :)

This migrant species occasionally arrives along with the Purple Marbled (E. ostrina). It is actually a macro moth but could be mistaken as a micro from its diminutive size, Wingspan 14-18 mm.

Most migrants have arrived in June and July, and mainly in the south of England. Seldom seen in our area in Worcestershire but there have been a few people report them this year!

Wingspan 26-29 mm.

Like the rather similar Blood-vein (Timandra griseata), this species has a cross-line which extends across all four wings when at rest, though the colour is generally less pink.

Feeding on privet (Ligustrum) and a variety of low-growing plants, the caterpillars overwinter.

The adults fly at night during July and August and occupy habitats such as waste ground, hedgerows and coastal sand-dunes.

It is fairly common in the southern half of Britain, but local further north.

Officially the smallest british butterfly

The Small Blue was once called the "Bedford Blue" and more recently the Little Blue. It was noted in scientific records in 1795.
